Our University Centre has been highly praised for forging strong links with employers by the independent body in charge of standards in universities and colleges.

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), which monitors the quality of education at universities and colleges across the country, praised the College for developing students’ job prospects by placing employers and employment at the heart of the curriculum.

An Associate College of Lancaster University

The vast majority of the courses that we offer are validated (approved) by Lancaster University who are frequently in the Top 10 of university league tables in the UK. Upon graduation, graduates receive a Lancaster University certificate. The vast majority of our students live within 20 miles of Blackburn. We especially attract students from the areas of Blackburn, Darwen, Accrington, Chorley, Ribble Valley and Clitheroe, Preston, Burnley and Nelson and Colne. Although some students travel from further afield, and we do have accommodation available, these students have chosen us as living at home is the financially sensible option. You may be able to keep your job (many students work full/part-time while studying), study while looking after children or caring for others or fit your study around the commitments you have.

We deliver specialist, bespoke training as well as Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Professional Qualifications, all of which equip the workforce with job relevant skills that match the current employment market. Our University Centre also provides Higher Education to employers, including Foundation Degrees, Degrees and Higher Level Apprenticeships.

Our employer engagement supports employability through enhancements to curriculum development, mentoring placements, volunteering opportunities and industry specialist speakers. As a result, 9 out of 10 graduates are in work or further study six months after graduation.

This Electrical / Electronic Engineering (HND) course enables you to gain an intermediate higher education qualification in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. This course could to appeal to you if you need to fit studying around other commitments or if you are looking to take your first step into higher education after a gap of study. Using electricity to process and store the information behind technology such as mobile phones and computers, as well as a huge range of systems in commerce and industry, is the principle that underlies electrical /electronic engineering. Both depend on the same fundamental scientific laws, but diverge widely beyond these starting points. As technology progresses, we become more reliant on electrical and electronic systems to control mechanical devises and as such the opportunities for employment in this sector have increased. In the early stages of the course you’ll learn more about these underlying principles, both electrical and electronic, as well as computing and maths. You also acquire some of the key practical skills you will need. WHAT WILL I STUDY? You’ll study a set of modules that have been specifically chosen to equip you in your chosen field of work and also that are directly relevant to students who wish to secure employment or promotion in companies operating in the North West region of the UK. Higher National Diplomas are a well-respected industry qualification for engineering students and employers value the practical as well as theoretical skills that you gain on the programme. Mechanical Engineering is specifically concerned with design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of just about anything that has moveable parts. As a result, there are job opportunities for mechanical engineers in practically every field of work, transport(including aerospace), health, defence, manufacturing, entertainment, finance, publishing, building, design and research, to name but a few. This well established national qualification is set at an intermediate undergraduate level and places academic theory within a practical context. The Foundation Degree is suitable for those who are currently in employment in an accounting environment or an accounting-related position, or those who are seeking employment in these fields. This course should appeal to you if you need to fit studying around other commitments or if you are looking to take your first step into higher education after a gap of study. What will I study? The content of the Foundation Degree covers accounting concepts as well as introducing other business related topics. You will develop the practical accounting skills demanded by employers such as the ability to draft financial statements and produce costing and budgeting reports, as well as analysis and decision making in appropriate contexts. This will allow you a thorough appreciation of the interrelation these topics have within a business context. The course also includes the development of soft-skills which are important to employers. It is designed to provide students with a range of transferable business skills such as communication, ICT, numeracy, problem-solving and working in teams. The course encompasses all the main functions of business (see course content below). Students will also working in a relevant business area or will be expected to undertake a minimum of 40 days work placement over the two years. Different sessions of the course are run throughout the year. You might choose to study one afternoon and evening a week, or a full-day session of the course, or over two evenings a week depending on student numbers and demand. Our flexible timetables will enable you to choose an option that is suitable for you, enabling you to fit your course around other commitments. What will I study? In the first year of the course you will study modules which provide a background perspective of the business you operate in. All businesses need to be aware of the economic, financial, legal and social environments in which they operate. All students also undertake one module on research methods which acts as preparation for a research project in Year 2. The second year expands on these modules and introduces a number of management modules. Modules include: Business Environment Research Methods Business Information Technology Reflective Practitioner Business Marketing Organisational Behaviour Business Law Managing Financial Resources Quantitative Techniques Research Project Work-Based Learning The Internet and eBusiness Human Resource Management Management and Leadership Business Finance Operations Management Entry Requirements You'll need 120 UCAS tariff points. All applicants must show that they have a good level of spoken or written English, and if English is not your first language you'll need to demonstrate the ability to study in English. Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have relevant work / life experience will be considered on an individual basis and may be invited to interview. Please note: For 2017 entry the UCAS Tariff is changing and the UCAS points required to enter this programme will be different from 2016. For those joining this programme in September 2017, you will need to have 48 UCAS Tariff points. All other entry criteria (as specified above) remain in place. If you are an International Student from outside of the EU it is a requirement for you to have a Tier 4 Visa in order to study with us. In order for you to undertake this particular programme of study, you will also need to demonstrate that you have a good level of written and spoken English and will require a UK VI Academic IELTS score of 5.5.
