Abbey College Cambridge

Introduction

Over 300 students from 30 countries study with us. They are united by one ambition: to enter one of the top universities in the UK. Our students, working together with our well-qualified, professional staff, form a college community that’s dedicated to outstanding achievement for all.

Our students speak of the college environment as being like a family. From day one they are made to feel very welcome both in and outside of their lessons. In our accommodation they make new friends and thrive in an truly inclusive international environment.

Our students’ track record speaks for itself, and their results have established our college as one of the very best in the UK. In 2015 our A level students achieved an A/B pass rate of 82% and, even more stunning, an A-A pass rate of 61%.

Our location in the city of Cambridge is a fusion of the everyday and the extraordinary. It is a city that has shaped our history and continues to make its mark on our future.

Our History

h

Since our foundation in 1994 Abbey College Cambridge has become one of the best sixth form colleges for international students in the UK.

We have developed and maintained an outstanding record of academic success. Our students’ exceptional A level pass rates mean that we have been consistently placed at the top of college league tables since 1997.

Our college community has grown significantly during this time and we now have 340 students from over 30 countries who are taught and supported by 90 members of staff.

During this growth our educational ethos has remained very clear: outstanding achievement for all. Our educational offering has changed since 1994, from being initially designed for A level retaking students to now being a GCSE, Foundation and A level college specialising in meeting the needs of international students.

Our college is designated as being an “Outstanding School” by the UK school inspectorate, OFSTED, as a result of achieving the highest grade in all 12 judgements made on teaching and boarding quality in the college.

In July 2016 we undertook a new stage in our development by moving to a new single site, purpose built campus. Our new college campus has been designed by the staff of Abbey College Cambridge to perfectly fit the needs of our students.

Abbey College Cambridge is a constituent college of the Abbey DLD Group of Colleges, which is in turn part of the Alpha Plus Group.

College Life

s

Our students gain the very best academic results. We achieve this through rigorous but informal teaching, small class sizes, frequent testing and expert teachers who put the interests of each of our students at the centre of everything they do.

We believe that students, of any age, achieve great things through their own intelligence, imagination and initiative. But we also believe that our role is to create the structures in which this can happen.

Our Students achieve their outstanding results because our teachers care about their welfare and progress. They help them develop confidence and the discipline and motivation necessary to convert their efforts into results.

Personal Tutors oversee academic progress; they meet the students under their care every week.

Academic English

Campus Full time Part time August 2017 United Kingdom Cambridge

We offer a range of Academic English courses based on students' individual needs and aspirations. [+]

We offer a range of Academic English courses based on students' individual needs and aspirations. What is Academic English? English is the primary global language of business, academia and international relations, it is the global lingua franca. A level courses at Abbey College Cambridge and throughout the UK are taught in English, it will also be the language of instruction for the degree courses that you will go on to study at university. Why study Academic English? Whilst the overall benefits that mastering the English language brings are huge, if your primary goal is to be accepted into your chosen university in the UK or another English speaking country, you will be required to demonstrate a specified level of proficiency in English. This is usually demonstrated by a score in a recognised English language test, such as IELTS. Beyond this, a high level of English will have a very positive influence on your A levels, allowing you to understand more, write better, and achieve your maximum potential in your exam results. Also, it will help you get the most out of your time in the UK, allowing you to enjoy more clubs and activities, make friends, and better understand the country you are living in. Finally, looking ahead to your future, good quality English is almost certain to prove invaluable in your career, allowing you to work in an international context and access areas which might otherwise have been closed off to you. What will I learn? At Abbey College Cambridge, we work to raise your language ability in all areas, enabling you to cope with English in both an academic and an everyday context. You will spend the first stages of our course developing your General English in all of the four main skills; Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, as well as in the language systems, such as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. You may work towards an internationally recognised qualification as part of the course. The solid base that you gain will help you to maximise your score in IELTS through the acquisition of many transferable skills. As you move through the course we’ll also provide you with intensive preparation for the IELTS final examinations. Towards the end of the year, you will be given the opportunity to sit IELTS with the aim of achieving a score suited to your choice of course and institution. Throughout our course, you will be taught by friendly, professional and well-qualified teachers. You will be encouraged to read widely, listen to English speaking media, and speak the language as much as possible outside the class. This will prove crucial as widespread exposure to and practice in the language will result in speedier progress. We will also organise trips, activities, social events and guest speakers as part of the course programme, which will provide great opportunities to use your language skills. [-]
