All members of our faculty are professional English instructors with extensive experience teaching English as a second language.

The Tufts English Language Programs are innovative in the way they combine classroom material with real-life experience. Tufts English Language and International Programs can create individualized or custom programs that provide flexibility to independent student and professional groups sponsored by universities, educational institutions, or agencies. We will work in close consultation with your educational institution or agency to develop curriculum and activity programs that meet your group’s language needs in a number of special interest areas. All of our programs are flexible and can be delivered in a variety of formats. English Today

Tufts faculty draw upon students' unique contributions to their classes and their own creativity. Teachers are available outside of class for individual appointments. In this way, each student receives individual attention. [+]

Four- and Six-Week The English Today four- and six-week programs are designed for individuals ages 17 years or older who desire a combination of classes and activities to make the most of their summer in Boston. Tufts faculty draw upon students' unique contributions to their classes and their own creativity. Teachers are available outside of class for individual appointments. In this way, each student receives individual attention. Evening tutoring sessions led by Tufts English Language and International Program staff provide support for you in completing homework assignments and discovering new aspects of American culture. When you enroll in an English Today program, you have access to all of the following options for learning: Core Course Discover the key to effective communication in English during this 2-hour, 20-minute class that meets Monday - Friday mornings. Experienced teachers help you strengthen your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in small classes (under 20 students), each grouped by ability from low intermediate to advanced. Our dynamic American style of teaching will bring out the best learner in you. Special Interest Elective Gain confidence and ease with English in a one-hour elective that immediately follows your core class as you concentrate on issues that interest you. Topics change from year to year, but here are a sampling of topics from previous years: Current and World Events American Idioms and Culture History and Culture of Boston TOEFL Preparation Novel Reading Discover America Excursions Tufts instructors will accompany you on Discover America excursions on Wednesday afternoons, to explore important American institutions such as an active courtroom, historical museums, and Boston's Freedom Trail. Through these experiences, you will acquire an in-depth knowledge of American culture and institutions. Each 6-week student is required to participate in two Discover America excursions. 4-week students are required to participate in one Discover America excursion. Afternoon Intensive Option Maximize your study time in the U.S. in a supportive learning environment four days a week. Students will cover the cost of the shipment of this packet. High School This program modifies the university-level English Today program for high school students ages 15 to 17 who are curious about American culture and history, Boston, and life at a university. Learn to strengthen your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a small, personalized classroom environment through interactive and engaging in-class activities. Optional twice-a-week workshop classes offer additional English language preparation opportunities. You will also have the chance to experience Boston and its rich culture and history by participating in daily excursions off campus. In addition, each Wednesday afternoon a faculty member leads the students on a Discover America field trip, giving you the opportunity to experience a guided tour of historical and political sites in Boston. These one-of-a-kind learning experiences will give you an in-depth knowledge of American culture and history. The cost of this program is $2,520 per student. This rate covers tuition, meals, room, activities, a 24-hour hospitality desk, insurance, and airport transfers. The standard $50 application fee is not included in this price. The English Language and International Programs will allow educational agencies and high schools who recruit students to send chaperones. Summer Institute for International Scholars

For over 25 years, the Tufts Summer Institute for International Scholars has trained students to write American-style research papers and communicate effectively in a graduate school setting. Through careful analysis of writing structure, thesis development, and a widened vocabulary base, students acquire the skills and confidence necessary to fully participate in a U.S. graduate degree program. For over 25 years, the Tufts Summer Institute for International Scholars has trained students to write American-style research papers and communicate effectively in a graduate school setting. Through careful analysis of writing structure, thesis development, and a widened vocabulary base, students acquire the skills and confidence necessary to fully participate in a U.S. graduate degree program. Classes are taught in a seminar environment that closely resembles the U.S. graduate school experience. When needed, the program staff can arrange evening tutoring sessions to complement this intensive academic program. If you intend to pursue further study at a college or university, and have a minimum TOEFL score of 71 internet based (iBT)/197 computer based/530 paper based, we welcome your application to join this select group of scholars. Classes meet Monday - Friday 9:00 am to 12:30 and consist of these two following courses: Academic Speaking Course Develop and perfect your language skills for teamwork, discussions, debates, and other verbal interactions with this 1-hour, 45-minute class. We tailor grammar and pronunciation instruction to meet your skill level. (Average: 10 students per class) Research Writing Course Learn to construct a graduate-level research paper in this 1-hour, 45-minute class. You will meet with your writing instructor to receive individual feedback and learn to strengthen your listening, note-taking, writing, and seminar presentation skills. (Average: 10 students per class).
