Columbia West College

Introduction

Right now, we know you have a lot of questions about choosing the right language school – and rightfully so. You obviously want a school that combines quality programs and instruction, helpful student services and expert faculty with a warm and engaging environment. But most importantly, you want a school that takes the time to understand you and will help you to master the English language so that you can achieve your goals. Other language schools may make similar promises.

So what makes Columbia West College different from all the rest?

First and foremost, I understand the hardships that you’re facing as an English language student, because I went through them myself when I came to the United States over three decades ago. I’m very familiar with the panicky feeling you get when an American says something to you in English that you don’t understand. I know exactly how frustrating it can be when you can’t express yourself clearly in English. And I understand your hesitation to speak English freely for fear that you might say something wrong and embarrass yourself. So, I started this school specifically to help students just like you. And because I’ve overcome these obstacles and helped so many students to do the same, we at Columbia West College understand the challenges you’re facing and know that you can achieve success.

Not only that, we realize you have very personal and unique reasons for wanting to learn English. Your needs, goals and desires are different from everyone else’s, and we want to put you on an educational path that fits what you want to accomplish. Columbia West College is here to help you reach your goals by providing you with a rigorous curriculum, experienced teachers and a “students come first” environment to support you on your journey.

So whatever your goals – to further your education, to make yourself more marketable to employers or simply to feel comfortable and confident speaking to an American, an education at Columbia West College can serve as the key to unlocking your dreams. Most importantly, we’re excited to get to know you. So go ahead and dream big. Let us help you make your dreams a reality. We can’t wait to help you write your success story.

Warmest regards, Dr. Samuel N. Lee President, Columbia West College

For many of our students at Columbia West College, the pathway to developing their talent and achieving success includes attending an American university. We also understand that while preparing for university is exciting, it’s usually a stressful time for students, too. Plus, even if you’ve taken a lot of English language courses and feel pretty comfortable in English, you may not feel confident about what to expect and what’s expected of you at a US university. At Columbia West College, we want to reduce the stress associated with attending a US college or university by giving you the tools and skills you need to feel confident and succeed at the university level. We accomplish this in a few different ways. First, students are given a strong foundation of academic English language skills through our ESL classes at our Los Angeles campus. Next, after developing the necessary English language skills, university-bound students are encouraged to take the Introductory or Advanced Levels (or both) of our University Preparation program. A typical university preparation program teaches students university level academic skills, but our University Preparation program is unique and goes far beyond that. We also take the time to familiarize students with American university culture and teach the out-of-classroom skills needed for success. These include time and stress management, effective classroom interaction and study skills. We do this because we know that students need more than just strong academic skills to make a successful jump to university. So, whether you’ve already been accepted to a university, perhaps through our University Pathway program, or are just starting the process, our University Preparation program will provide you with the foundation to succeed at your future university and beyond! Read below for more details about our University Preparation program. TOEFL CLASSES IN LOS ANGELES Many of our international students here at Columbia West College dream of attending a top university in the United States. To make this dream a reality, they must score as high as possible on the TOEFL iBT® test (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based test), because US universities require the TOEFL as part of the application process for international students. The TOEFL measures students’ ability to understand and speak English at an advanced academic level by testing their English language reading, listening, writing and speaking skills. Passing the TOEFL exam requires a very high level of proficiency in English, which is why at Columbia West College, we offer one of the best, most comprehensive TOEFL test preparation programs in Los Angeles. HOW DOES THE TOEFL PROGRAM WORK? Our TOEFL program is designed to not only familiarize students with each section of the TOEFL test but also teach students effective standardized test-taking strategies. Our TOEFL classes allow students to strengthen the skills needed for success on the TOEFL – academic writing, critical reading-analysis, advanced listening comprehension and the ability to process and communicate information effectively in the English language. And because we use real TOEFL practice tests in our TOEFL classes, students can feel confident knowing that they are building a strong foundation for getting the best scores possible. WHAT ARE TOEFL CLASSES LIKE? Every class in our TOEFL program is structured around the top TOEFL iBT® textbooks and materials available, while regular computer-based practice tests simulate the test conditions students will face when they take the TOEFL iBT®. At Columbia West College, we also want our students to take responsibility for their own progress by developing the ability to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses on the TOEFL iBT® test, so our teachers can provide additional focused practice (such as supplemental reading texts and audio exercises) on the areas of the test where students need the most help. Together, these resources and techniques provide our students with the most effective, realistic preparation available. As a result, students can expect to improve the following specific skills measured by the TOEFL iBT®: Written Responses: Ability to write clearly using appropriate vocabulary, grammar and essay structures. Critical Reading: Ability to scan reading texts to identify main points and details as well as paraphrase a variety of reading texts. Listening Skills: Ability to take notes on listening passages with efficiency and accuracy. Oral Responses: Ability to give clear responses about specific topics within a given time limit while using appropriate vocabulary, grammatical structures, clear pronunciation, stress, rhythm and intonation. In addition to improving these specific skills, students in Columbia West College’s TOEFL classes learn helpful strategies for test-taking success. For instance, our experienced and highly qualified teachers will help students to identify the different types of reading and listening questions asked on the TOEFL iBT® test and provide many examples of each question type. This approach helps students learn to recognize wrong answers quickly and take the right steps to arrive at correct answers. [-]
