Cal Poly English Language Institute

Introduction

The Cal Poly English Language Institute (CPELI) specializes in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and academic preparation for international students who plan to continue their higher education in the United States. Our ESL program consists of five levels of instruction, from beginner to advanced. The courses are designed to develop the language and study skills necessary for success in an American college or university. In addition to our full-time Intensive English Program, our institute, in cooperation with the Cal Poly Pomona College of the Extended University, also offers short-term professional training programs as well as the English and American Culture Camps.

We strive to enhance our instruction with a variety of opportunities for students to practice what they are learning, both in Conversation Club, and in more informal cultural settings such as trips to museums, concerts, festivals and sporting events. Our belief is that a student learns by "doing" and by being challenged daily with new material and new ideas.

We consider it absolutely essential to go beyond these language skills by instructing our students on the culture of the classroom. This culture consists of how to study, how to take a test, how to use a computer, how to research and organize ideas and how to behave in the academic environment. The tactics that we teach are based on what we ourselves have experienced as students and on what professors at Cal Poly Pomona require of their students. This is why we provide our students with basic computer training, TOEFL preparation, and credit-bearing classes for upper-level students. We strongly believe that no international student is completely prepared for university study without these academic skills. It is only through a combination of solid language skills and of responsible academic skills that a student can achieve success.

At CPELI our focus is on the student, so staff members are always available to advise students on housing, health insurance, immigration laws, registration requirements, and college placement. So, please come and join us. We have been preparing students for university study since 1991, and we would like you to be part of the Cal Poly English Language Institute. Our goal is to help you reach your goal.

What is the Cal Poly Pomona Academic Studies Program? The Academic Studies Program (A.S.P.) at the Cal Poly English Language Institute provides qualified international students the opportunity to enroll in credit classes at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (CPP). In addition, the A.S.P. offers students a variety of classes and support services designed to enhance student success in these credit classes. Students may enter the program at different stages based on official transcripts and official English proficiency scores (iBT TOEFL, IELTS, and/or iTEP) submitted with the A.S.P. application. At each stage of the program, students may enroll in a combination of credit classes and non-credit contact-hour classes in order to maintain a full-course of study. What are the objectives of the Academic Studies Program? The A.S.P. seeks to provide qualified international students a combination of English language skills development and university-level coursework that matches their specific level of English language proficiency and academic achievement. All grades for credit classes will be recorded on an official Cal Poly Pomona transcript. Who should apply for the Academic Studies Program? The Academic Studies Program is a visiting student program. Students are able to enroll in Cal Poly Pomona approved classes without applying to the university. Students who study in the A.S.P. are non-matriculating, non-degree seeking students. International students who are interested in pursuing a degree at Cal Poly Pomona should apply for full acceptance to their program of choice through the regular admissions process. At all stages, the Academic Studies Program is designed simulate a full-time course of study in an American university. Students should expect a rigorous academic experience that reflects the best traditions of Cal Poly Pomona’s “learn by doing” philosophy. Therefore, students who are motivated to perform consistently at a high academic level are right for the A.S.P. How long may I study in the Academic Studies Program? Students may study in the A.S.P. for up to four quarters depending on the level of courses taken. The form I-20 may not be extended past four quarters. Eligibility Guidelines for Undergraduate Students Submission of high school and/or university course transcripts/marksheet. Transcripts need to be provided for each year of study since 9th grade.
