Introduction

Wiltshire College is one of the largest public funded Further and Higher Education colleges in the UK. Each year thousands of students join us to further their education and achieve their goals.

The College was formed in recent years through the merger of Chippenham, Lackham, Trowbridge and Salisbury Colleges, however the history of the individual college campuses can be traced back as far as the early 1900s.

The College is spread across 4 main campuses and 5 smaller centres throughout the county of Wiltshire in the heart of Southern England. Most of our international students are based at the Salisbury Campus, just 7 miles from one of the most visited landmarks in the UK, Stonehenge.

We offer a broad range of courses for international students, providing a safe and welcoming environment that will ensure you learn and develop your English Language, academic and/or vocational skills.

General English for International students (Elementary to Upper Intermediate)

This course is for international students who wish to improve their English language skills in a supportive and English speaking environment in the UK. We offer courses at Elementary (equivalent to A2 or IELTS band 3.0), Intermediate (equivalent to B1 or IELTS bands 3.5-4.5) and Upper Intermediate (equivalent to B2 or IELTS band 5.0-6.0) levels... General English for International students (Elementary to Upper Intermediate) This course is for international students who wish to improve their English language skills in a supportive and English speaking environment in the UK. We offer courses at Elementary (equivalent to A2 or IELTS band 3.0), Intermediate (equivalent to B1 or IELTS bands 3.5-4.5) and Upper Intermediate (equivalent to B2 or IELTS band 5.0-6.0) levels. Students will undertake an initial assessment to determine their current level of English, and will then study in a class which matches their current level of English. Regular weekly reviews and tests will be undertaken to encourage students to revise new language and provide a measure of progress. This course of study will include IELTS preparation. Course fees vary according to the length of study required. Course fees 10 Weeks £1550 20 weeks £2900 30 weeks £4350 These are examples of costs for different lengths of study. Students can study from 2 weeks to one year. Location Salisbury City Campus Aims of the course The course aims are to develop your language abilities and skills in the following areas: Grammar - Students will work on all aspects of grammar according to level, including the tense system, modal verbs, comparing and contrasting, conditional sentences and discrete language items as required. Vocabulary - Students will acquire new words according to topic focus and individual needs. Example topics are; city life, food & drink, communication, education, travel, family life, work and current affairs. Speaking & Listening skills - Lessons will provide outcomes where students become more confident in speaking and listening. They will improve in fluency, accuracy and have pronunciation instruction for greater clarity. Improvement in this area will complement their grammar and vocabulary development. Writing aims - From basic sentence construction to complex phrases and text organisation, students will be able to produce written work with greater accuracy and confidence. Text types include formal and informal letters, job applications and emails. Reading aims - Students will learn how to use text to enhance vocabulary and as a means of guided discovery of language items. They will also develop reading skills such as skimming and scanning. Functions of English - Students will learn how to operate in English using a variety of functions, such as making requests, giving advice, sharing opinions and expressing feelings. Intercultural Communication - A special feature of the course is a weekly lesson focused on politeness and cultural similarities/differences. Tutorial Services As a full-time student at Wiltshire College, you will be supported throughout your course by either a Personal Tutor, Academic Advisor or Learning Mentor. Entry requirements These courses require some knowledge of English and an ability to read and write using the English alphabet. What next? HND Business The Higher National Diploma in Business (International Programme) is ideal for students seeking a higher education qualification and training in the world of business and international trade. The HND Business is a level 5 qualification which means it is at the same level as foundation degrees and other higher education diplomas awarded by universities. A key feature of this HND is that it provides a specialist business education over a two year period linked to professional body requirements (for example the Chartered Management Institute) and ensures a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required to progress into employment or continued undergraduate studies. Learners are attracted to the HND Business as it meets the needs of individual progression whether into employment or to further study on degree or professional courses. This HND Business at Wiltshire College has an international theme with specific units providing training and development in the process and development of international business. These are essential skills to develop for employment in our increasingly global economy. Foundation Art and Design The Art and Design Foundation has been running for over 50 years and is recognised by the best UK Art and Design institutes with students progressing on to some of these every year. Students are provided with permanent workstations in a well-lit, purpose built studio with access to excellent specialist workshops for 3D work, ceramics, printmaking, photography and computer work. Regular tutorials are an important part of the programme allowing tutors to work with students to focus on their coursework and help to identify their strengths and future progression. During both the autumn and spring terms there are organised visits to see galleries and exhibitions in London. Course structure The one year foundation consists of 7 mandatory units covering a whole range of art and design, including drawing, painting, basic design, surface and colour, 3D studies, print making, photography, digital media and art and design history. The first part of this course is 'diagnostic'; students explore a wide range of media and methods and are then able to diagnose which area fits their abilities and aspirations. At Christmas students choose to specialise in one of four broad areas for the remainder of the course: 3D Design and Craft, Fashion and Textiles, Visual Communications or Fine Art. Students often choose areas which they had not previously anticipated and students who studied Art at A Level often become designers. The purpose of your one to one tutorial is to ensure that you are making the necessary progress towards the achievement of your main qualification aim and to address any academic or personal issues that you may wish to raise. Wiltshire Foundation Year The Wiltshire International Foundation Year (IFY) is a one year pre-university programme, including a significant degree of English language teaching. The programme is designed to provide students with an entry route to UK university programmes and there are progression arrangements with over 30 UK universities. The IFY aims to improve students general and academic English language ability, study skills and cultural understanding and introduce them to academic study in English in the fields of computing and/or business at a suitable level. Course structure To complete the programme candidates must study and pass eight modules. The programme consists of the following six core modules: Developing English Language Skills Advanced English Language Skills English for Academic Purposes Study and Communication Skills Culture Studies Foundation Mathematics Students choose two of the following modules to make up to 8 in total: Introduction to Computing Introduction to Programming Introduction to Business Introduction to Accounting and Economics Career prospects and opportunities Students recenty completing this course have successfully progressed onto their chosen degree at some of the leading UK Universities as well as Deakin University (Australia) and Limkokwing Institute of Creative Technology (Malaysia) Assessment Methods Assessments for all modules will be offered in a number of assessment cycles throughout the year. University of Bath International Foundation Year The International Foundation Year is a one year course based at Wiltshire College Salisbury that prepares students for entry onto their chosen University of Bath degree. As long as students achieve the necessary grades they will be guaranteed automatic entry into Year 1 at one of the highest ranking Universities in the UK. The International Foundation Year has been developed especially for international students, because it is important to have the opportunity to learn how to study in the UK and to develop the appropriate study skills ready for progression to the University of Bath. The University of Bath has accredited Wiltshire College to run the International Foundation Year; chosen for their excellent teaching and support for international students. Course structure During the International Foundation Year, students choose three subjects to study from the following list: Biology Business Chemistry Mathematics Economics Physics Social Science English (for Academic Purposes) Students will also undertake a study skills programme. The College will help and guide each student enabling them to choose the right three subjects to meet the entry requirements for the chosen degree. Arranged over two 15-week semesters, students will have a comprehensive range of lectures, tutorials, and group work as well as laboratory classes, where appropriate. Each unit is made up of coursework and an end of semester examination. Throughout the course students will develop the subject knowledge needed as well as acquiring the study and academic English language skills required to succeed in the UK’s higher education system. There are 30 weeks of study in total, with 23 hours of classroom study per week. Students will be required to complete a considerable amount of self-study to stay on top of their work. Career prospects and opportunities Each year, over 85% of our IFY students progress to the University of Bath with the remainder accepting a place at an alternative UK university. The success of our students is a high priority at Wiltshire College. One of the many benefits of having a relatively small cohort of international students is that our staff know each student individually and can ensure that they stay on top of their work and have access to the support they need, when they need it. Entry requirements The minimum qualifications needed to be considered for a place on the International Foundation Year are shown below. A score of 5.5 in one part of the test will be considered if the other three parts are 6.5 or higher.
