About Bifröst University

Bifröst University was founded in Reykjavík Iceland in 1918 on the model of Ruskin College, , under the name or the . From the start its role was to educate leaders for business and society at large. The school was moved to in 1955, situated 110km north of the capital. Bifröst is the only Liberal Arts campus school in the country, it was accredited university in 1988, first only in Busines, then also offering degrees in Law since 2002 and in Social Science since 2005.

is a private, self-governing, non-profit institution, which receives around 40% of its income from the Icelandic state, 40% from tuition fees and 20% from other sources. Alumni from Bifröst include many prominent entrepreneurs and leaders in Icelandic business and politics, including Prime Minister of the country.

Bifröst also offers a one-year pre-university level preparatory study program for students lacking full university entrance qualifications, as well as various life-long learning programs including successful programs for retail management, for tourism and one for people working in local government. Many of Bifröst’s undergraduate students spend one or more terms abroad at partner universities in America, Asia and continental Europe.

Bifröst University is an active member of the Icelandic and international research communities and prides itself for recruiting faculty with broad research profiles in the social sciences. Bifröst University hosts many independent research centers, for example Centre for European Studies, Centre for Retail Studies and Research Centre of Cultural Management. Bifröst University has lead many research projects funded by the Icelandic Research Council in addition to projects funded by the EC Research Framework program. Bifröst University has also participated in many academic networks of the COST and ERASMUS programs, as well as the Northern Periphery program.

The Summer School 2017 Program The Summer School is located in the nature paradise of Bifröst Village in West Iceland, right between a volcano and a glacier. Students are accommodated in comfortable single and double rooms at the program´s beautiful campus on the shore of Lake Hreðarvatn. The three week program (6 ECTS / 3 US Credits) offers high level Leadership studies with emphasis on Innovation, Startups and Sustainability . The Summer School will take place from July 8th to July 29th 2017. The Summer School gives students Leadership training and prepares them for the challenges that future leaders will face. Here you can read an article about the Summer School in 2016, written by one of the students: Campus The Summer School takes place at our campus located in the nature paradise Bifröst village. The area consists of a volcano and a glacier, and the campus consists of Lake Hreðarvatn, Glanni waterfall, Glanni golf course and Paradise Hollow, all within walking distance. Living together at the campus is an integral part of the summer program. The engaging campus life stimulates joint activities and intercultural and social exchange. Accommodation Students are accommodated in comfortable single rooms with private baths. All rooms are equipped with a desk and chair. All apartments have kitchen and living room. Accommodation is guaranteed on campus and is only 50 meters from the university building. Meals All meals are served in the dining hall. The breakfast buffet normally consists of a wide variety of breads, jams, eggs, cheese, ham, sausages, cereals and muesli. Coffee, tea, milk, and orange juice are available during breakfast. Lunch and dinner meals include a variety of Icelandic dishes. Vegetarian dishes are also available. Please note that the Bifröst Summer School cannot guarantee that all dietary needs students may have can be met. Service and Facilities The Bifröst University office of the Summer School will be at student´s service from Monday to Friday 8:00am-12:00am and 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The staff will be available for questions and support. There is a library on campus where students can select books with the assistance of staff. All reading material needed for the courses will be provided by the university without additional costs. Printing and copying machine are provided on campus. Study rooms will be available for students to study alone or in groups. Wireless internet connection is available on campus free of charge for those who bring their own laptop. Aim and Content Leaders of the future will be faced with challenging tasks in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. The course will explore emerging ideas about leadership and provide practical training in leadership. The Nordic Leadership Model and Servant Leadership will be in special focus. Sustainability and social responsibility will be discussed and the role of entrepreneurship and innovation will be examined. The course will include both academic lectures and discussion periods and more practical approaches that will include assignments, group work and field trips. Learning Outcomes Students can explain basic concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship and are capable of assessing the importance of sustainability and social responsibility in future development. Students can describe and explain key approaches in leadership and link them to topics associated with social responsibility, innovation and entrepreneurship. Students can demonstrate knowledge on leadership and participate in discussion of the most relevant concepts and ideas related to leadership, social responsibility, innovation and entrepreneurship. Students have skills to apply different leadership approaches in practical settings. Students can participate actively in creativity sessions, formulate their ideas, and communicate them with others. Welcome to the Adventurous Bifröst University in Iceland Get surrounded by glaciers, volcanoes, midnight sun, lakes, waterfalls and a nature that is irresistible for hiking. A Semester in Iceland is an option for free mover students who are not from one of the partner universities of Bifröst University and would like to stay in Iceland for study and adventure. The program offers an opportunity to study at an ambitious and dynamic university, located in a truly unique environment. Bifröst University is located in the valley ´Norðurárdalur´ in Borgarfjörður, approx. 100 Km from Reykjavik. It nests in the magnificent and strikingly beautiful lava, offering endless opportunities to experience unspoiled nature at its best. On campus, students will find a minimarket, cafe/bar, gym, soccer field, basketball hoops, laundrette, ATM and a kindergarten. Courses Students can choose to participate in 1-5 courses.
