Via Training Centre

Introduction

Victoria International Academy opened in August 2002, and soon developed the VIA TESL Diploma program. The VIA TESL Diploma Program began using the current curriculum in January 2003. Lilla Capaldo, our full time 120 hour program instructor, joined the VIA TESL Program faculty in 2010 after completing the VIA TESL Diploma Program and teaching ESL at Victoria International Academy for several years. She brings a wealth of ESL teaching experience into the TESL program and is currently the TESL Program Supervisor and Practicum Supervisor.

VIA Training Centre’s TESOL/ TESL course is the longest running program on Vancouver Island and we are proud of our teachers and curriculum. We have been training teachers for 10 years and have an excellent reputation. Our grads leave with everything they need to manage their classes successfully and are well-equipped to find work teaching.

Our teachers are well-loved by all students for their high energy and way of making the classroom come to life. They make use of many lesson simulations, teach students tons of useful activities, encourage and support students when it’s their turn to practice teaching. They offer excellent advice and make sure students are ready to deliver a class.

Teachers get the most of their training at our Centre because unlike many other teacher training colleges, we are also an ESL school so the TESL students have a chance to observe our own classes and interact with our students. They also have a chance to consult with our Canadian English teachers about their teaching styles. We have a small library of books for TESL teachers to consult, computers for their use in class or on breaks and free W-Fi. Many students like to stay around after class hours and enjoy free coffee while they surf the internet.

Through our Conversation Buddies program, TESL students have a chance to practice teaching one to one with our students. TESL graduates can start their career and build their hours through the Victoria Intercultural Association’s volunteer programs.

Background

Victoria International Academy opened VIA Training Centre in 2005 as an extension of the ESL programs offered at VIA. With programs designed by master TESL and ESL educators, VIA Training Centre has grown from one full-time TESL program to two full-time and two online TESL programs. Based on Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), VIA TESL Diploma Programs are designed to meet or exceed TESL Canada requirements.
