Graduate Certificate in Disaster Risk Reduction

Campus or Online Full time May 2017 Australia Newcastle

Students of the program engage fundamental disaster risk concepts, and receive training in the use of the most globally adopted DRR tools and protocols, some of these through direct engagement with UNITAR resources. [+]

In early 2015 the United Nations oversaw the creation of the game-changing "Sendai Framework" in Japan – a global strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) for 2015-2030. The result is a challenge to organisations throughout civil Society the world over to alter how they address issues of Hazard and vulnerability, and deal with risk! In parallel with these events the University of Newcastle and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) worked together in order to develop the Graduate Certificate in Disaster Risk Reduction, in order to provide graduates with the knowledge to manage the DRR process across all sectors of society. Students of the program engage fundamental disaster risk concepts, and receive training in the use of the most globally adopted DRR tools and protocols, some of these through direct engagement with UNITAR resources. Graduates will be capable of conducting disaster risk evaluations, and guiding the subsequent development of disaster risk mitigation and management strategies for the organisation in which they work. Our advanced online learning system, together with that of UNITAR provides you with the flexibility and support to study any time, anywhere to balance work, life and study. You can achieve your Graduate Certificate in Disaster Risk Reduction at a time that suits you, and will receive certification of your success from both the University of Newcastle and UNITAR. Is it for you? If you work in an organisation in any industry in a role that relates to assessment and management of risk and business continuity, or if you are considering this as a career path, then the Graduate Certificate in Disaster Risk Reduction is relevant to you. Organisations of all types will be impacted by disasters, meaning there is no such thing as a non-related professional field, and it is increasingly the case that employees are assigned to address vulnerability to extreme events by designing strategies to manage risk, speed up recovery and improve resilience. Even if you are highly experienced and have been operating in a role of this kind for several years, the Graduate Certificate can increase your professional capacity in relation to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) principles following the Sendai Framework and its impact. Career Pathways UNITAR is the UN agency with responsibility to foster the change needed to meet the recommendations of the Sendai framework. The UoN has entered into a strategic relationship with UNITAR, and now hosts CIFAL Newcastle, an international training centre with special focus on DRR. As a consequence of this link UoN graduates will be well positioned to move into organisations who require experts to specialise in, or have knowledge of DRR. Government organisations, private enterprises, non-governmental organisations, and not-for-profit will all require such professionals, as the Sendai framework begins to generate changes in practice. Risk-related industries such as insurance, will also require a strong knowledge of DRR of their professionals. This qualification has wide appeal, and is suitable for those pursuing a career as a risk manager, compliance officer, local government officer, WHS coordinator, and anybody who has responsibility for business continuity and human safety. Admission Requirements Bachelor Degree, Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate in a related field of study OR Associate Degree or Advanced Diploma in a related field of study plus 2 years’ relevant industry experience Note: Organisations of all types within civil society have the potential to be negatively impacted by disasters. The approporiateness of this program to potential students is therefore in large part determined by their role within those organisations (i.e. the extent to which they are, or are intended to become, responsible for its disaster risk reduction activities) rather than the nature or level of their prior qualifications (which will be assumed to be vocationally relevant to the organisation for which they work, and therefore be used to determine their educational eligibility for admission).
