Introduction to Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion
The course is intended as the first plasma physics course however it is also suitable for senior undergraduate students and graduate students.
The primary objective of the course is to present and develop the fundamentals of plasma physics particularly highlighting high-temperature plasma physics and its applications to controlled fusion. The course begins with the historical overview of plasma physics and introduction of plasma phenomena. It includes classical physics background, single particle motion in electric and magnetic fields, Coulomb collisions and transport processes, electromagnetic theory, fluid model of plasma, plasma confinement schemes, simple equilibrium and stability analysis, and principles of fusion machines. It also covers wave propagation in a magnetic field, kinetic description of plasmas, Vlasov model, electrostatic waves and Landau damping. The necessary mathematical apparatus (partial equations and complex analysis) will be introduces during the lectures.
CGS electrostatic units are used in the course.
The course’s main goal is to give students a coherent knowledge of Russia’s historical background relevant to its realities of the last decades, to analyze the major lines of the country’s transformation theory and features of its practical implementation at the last stages of the Communist experiment and post-Communist chaotic dismantlement of the country, to disclose and evaluate achievements and failures of ultra-liberal recipes for the post-Communist modernization and its most prominent features, thus contributing for better understanding of Russia’s present stage of development.
