Overview

In this summer school, students receive an introduction to cutting edge computer technology and methods used in mechanical engineering. This program offers an overview of numerical methods used to solve engineering problems, as well as an introduction to calculation and simulation techniques in production.

Course topics include:

  • Modeling of physical problems using Partial Differential Equations
  • Numerical Differentiation and Integration
  • Finite Element Methods and Numerical Solutions of Differential Equations

The RWTH International Academy works closely together with the International Office, the Language Center and the IAM, the Institute of General Mechanics at RWTH Aachen University, to offer a perfect mix of technical study and cultural experience.

The Institute of General Mechanics (IAM) at RWTH Aachen University has a permanent staff of 41, including 18 research associates and scientific assistants as well as 22 employees and apprentices in the administrative division, laboratories, construction office, and electrical and mechanical workshops. In addition, approximately 80 student assistants are engaged to help with teaching and research.

The research at the IAM pursues the idea of a holistic approach by combining the expertise in Theoretical, Numerical and Experimental Mechanics in the sense of "Everything from a single source.“ As the name of the institute suggests, the addressed research topics are manifold ranging from modeling super-alloy turbine blades over lifetime assessment of high-speed train components to simulating and experimental testing of degenerated human knee joints using bioreactors and a micro-CT scanner.

The Summer School is based on the following pillars:

I. Excellent Science and Research in Automation and Simulation Students will be exposed to such topics as the modelling of Physical Problems using Partial Differential Equations, Numerical Differentiation and Integration, Finite Element Methods and Numerical Solutions of Differential Equations.

II. German Language and Culture The Language Centre of the RWTH Aachen University provides an intensive German language course of 8 hours per week. The experienced German teachers take great care of the international students and convey not only German language skills but also a sense of German culture.

III. Social Events - Have fun while studying! While following an intensive academic programme, participants will experience German culture firsthand through an extensive leisure programme, including:

  • Intercultural training
  • Participation in the Buddy Progamme
  • Visits to important sights in and around Aachen
  • Excursions to nearby cities like Maastricht or Cologne
  • Sporting events
  • Barbecues and other cooking get-togethers, and a lot more.

Application Information

This Automation and Simulation Summer School is designed for undergraduate students who have a strong command of the English language and are interested in mechanical engineering and computer technology. You should thus have basic knowledge in the fields of: Mathematics, Mechanics, Material Science, Thermodynamics, Computer Science/Programming Techniques, Machine Drawing/Machine Elements, Modelling. Master Students who wish to get to know RWTH Aachen University and the city of Aachen are also welcome.

To apply for the summer school, please submit the following documents (merged as ONE PDF-file):

  • Your letter of intent (stating your motivation for applying to the programme, further study plans, and career goals)
  • Your curriculum vitae (résumé)
  • Your academic records or, if applicable, diploma or certificate
  • A colour photo of yourself

Early applications are encouraged! Apply by the 1st of March and you can receive an early bird discount on the total tuition fees - in case of admission.

We recommend all students to apply by 1 May in order to have enough time to make travel and visa arrangements.

We will evaluate your application based on the overall strength of your academic record, extracurricular experiences and your letter of intent. We will inform you in April/May whether you are admitted to the Summer School.

Certificate

Upon successful completion of the Automation and Simulation Summer School, you will receive a certificate from RWTH Aachen University in Germany stating the scope and content of the summer programme and their performance.

Fees

The tuition fee for the Automation & Simulation summer programme is EUR 2.800.

The course fees include all lectures, laboratory courses and excursions, accommodation, breakfast and lunch, social events and all meals during social events, and a public transportation ticket for the respective time.
