Professional Graduate Certificate in Education 14+ [PGCE 14+] [ University of Bolton ]
The University of Bolton Professional Graduate Certificate in Education 14+ is a teacher education course for graduates who wish to teach in the FE and Skills sector of education; for example, in adult and community education, further education, sixth form colleges, the prison and probation services, pre-employment training and work-based learning.
Your choice of study will depend on the subject and area in which you wish to teach.
For teaching in a vocational and/or academic curriculum area you will choose the Generic pathway.
For teaching ESOL/literacy or numeracy you will choose the Skills for Life pathway.
For teaching learners with additional needs you will choose the Teaching Learners with Additional Needs pathway.
You should select your specialist area at the time of your application.
The PGCE 14+ programmes meet the requirement of the FE-specific Diploma in Education and Training (DET).
You may study the Generic pathway at either the University of Bolton or at a partner college. If you wish to study at a partner college, you will need to contact the college directly for timetable information.
Please note: the Skills for Life pathways are only available for study at the University of Bolton; Bury College offers (ESOL/Literacy specialism route). The Teaching Learners with Additional Needs pathway is only available at the University of Bolton.
As part of your studies you will be required to carry out a teaching placement equivalent to two days a week. This may involve daytime or evening teaching or both. The university or partner college at which you are studying may find your placement for you or it may be possible for you to organise your own placement. If you organise your own placement this must be agreed in advance with your tutor who will need to confirm that the placement is suitable.
- The University of Bolton is at the centre of an extensive and well-established partnership of providers of post-14 education and training.
What you will learn
The course will equip you to be an effective teacher in the classroom, as well as providing you with the skills and knowledge to work in the FE and Skills sector of education.
Teaching placements are arranged for you in situations which meet the requirements for becoming a qualified teacher in the FE and Skills sector.
What you will study
The syllabus you follow will depend on the pathway and specialism you choose. If you wish to teach a curriculum or vocational subject in which you are already qualified, for instance art and design, business and legal studies, health and childhood studies, humanities, language and communications, maths and science or technology, you should apply for the Generic pathway.
Alternatively, if you are looking to teach in the Skills for Life sector you have a choice of English (Literacy/ESOL) or Mathematics (Numeracy).
If you specifically wish to teach learners with additional needs you should apply for the Teaching Learners with Additional Needs (TLAN) pathway.
For the Generic pathway, the minimum entry requirement is an honours degree (or equivalent) in a subject that is relevant to the area in which you wish to teach. If the degree is not from a recognised UK higher education institution advice will be taken from the International Office on comparability. You will also require DBS Enhanced Disclosure clearance and a health declaration prior to enrolment on the course. If English is not your first language you will need a recognised English language qualification at the appropriate level for this course, normally IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
