Students must obtain a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as well as 17-24 MGI points. For entrance into the BSc streams, students must obtain a minimum of 24 MGI points and an NSC with Mathematics as chosen subject. Please note that once you have successfully completed the Pre-degree Foundation Programme, your access to certain MGI degree streams (e.g. BSc) may also be dependent on subjects attempted or results achieved in Grade 12 (e.g. Mathematics). Please check these with a Student Advisor.
The programme is offered over a minimum period of one year and maximum period of two years.
The Pre-degree Foundation Programme was introduced at MGI in 2003 so that those students who do not meet current degree requirements could be prepared for a degree programme. Students who fail to meet entry requirements for MGI degrees, or those who have the incorrect subject combinations for a desired MGI degree, are permitted to complete the Pre-degree Foundation Programme as an alternative access path, provided certain requirements are met. The Pre-degree is a foundation programme and therefore has no credit bearing. On successful completion of the course, students will receive an MGI certificate, allowing them entry into a specific MGI degree course.
The programme serves as a bridging year between school and university-level education, and its aim is to teach students, in a supportive environment, the academic skills, knowledge and attitudes required to succeed in higher education. The programme includes modules required for all students as well as those specifically related to the proposed field of study. After passing the required modules, students will be permitted to register for a degree programme the following year. This programme is also suitable for students who are unsure of their proposed field of study. In addition to teaching content, the teaching strategies include specific guidance on how to approach learning activities.
Most modules include class activities and practical exercises as a preparation for formative assessments. The instruction and guidance given is more detailed than in a degree module and builds up to degree level by the end of the year. Facilitators use lecturing, tutoring, group and individual work as part of their strategies. Academic support is built into the modules.
This programme not only provides academic preparation, but includes personal development which plays a significant role in preparing students for their university-level studies and life in general. Evidence shows that many students who successfully completed the Pre-degree Foundation Programme perform well in their degree studies. In some cases they outperform students who went directly into degree studies.
The Pre-degree Foundation Programme is offered at both MGI’s main campus as well as MGI’s remote sites of delivery.
