Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering
This postgraduate diploma course offers you an opportunity both to broaden and deepen your understanding of professional engineering. By combining modules from engineering analysis and technology management, you can shape a qualification to suit your career aspirations. You will also take a project module where your project working takes place within a distributed group.
The postgraduate diploma also provides a route to a masters level engineering qualification if you fall outside the entry requirements for our Master of Engineering (MEng). This qualification can help you progress towards Chartered Engineer registration.
This Postgraduate Diploma offers you the opportunity to progress towards fulfilling the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. The Postgraduate Diploma programme will help you meet professional development needs as specified by the UK Engineering Council (ECUK) and relevant engineering institutions. In particular it will provide evidence of initial and continuing professional development.
Teaching, learning and assessment methods
Knowledge and understanding are acquired through studying distance-learning materials, including specially written study materials, study guides, assignments and project guides; through a range of computer-based activities; through CD-ROM, web- and text-based resource materials; through personal research; and through tutor feedback on assignments. Online forums provide an environment where you can deepen your understanding through discussion with other students and tutors.
Cognitive skills are developed through a range of activities including self-assessment exercises and computer-based investigations. They are supported by tutor-led discussions and activities online and by tutor feedback on assignments.
Practical and/or professional skills and attributes relate to the vocational relevance of the diploma. All teaching and assessment strategies will help you to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to the workplace, whatever combination of modules you take.
Key skills are taught and developed within the learning materials. They are explicitly assessed throughout the diploma and are supported by tutor feedback on assignments. Key skills also have strong vocational relevance and can transfer directly to the workplace.
In all modules, one component of the assessment comprises tutor-marked assignments (TMAs), set at intervals through the module and submitted electronically. All modules have either an end-of-course examination or an end-of-module project. The final, compulsory module project involves assessment of your individual work and of the work of your project team collectively.
On successful completion of the required modules you can be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering entitling you to use the letters PG Dip Eng (Open) after your name.
Once you have completed the postgraduate diploma, you can gain the MSc in Engineering by taking the 60-credit Research project (T802).
Fees and time
To achieve the Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering you must successfully gain 135 credits. The qualification typically takes two - three years to complete based on 12-16 hours of study each week.
The total cost of the qualification depends on the modules studied (please see the ‘Ready to Register’ tab); for the academic year 2012/13 they ranged from £7,360 to £10,425.
NB: As part of module T885 you will be required to attend a UK-based residential school. The cost of travel is not included in the module fee.
The knowledge and practical experience you gain during your postgraduate studies mean you'll be well placed to take advantage of the many senior engineering and technology employment opportunities available at home and abroad. At the same time, you'll be developing capabilities that are highly prized by employers in a variety of other sectors, where your logical thinking, numeracy skills, and team working abilities will be in demand.
To study for this postgraduate diploma you must hold a bachelors degree from a UK university or other recognised degree-awarding body, or a qualification at equivalent level.
If you already hold an honours degree that has been accredited by one of the engineering institutions licensed by the Engineering Council , this diploma course will take you one stage further towards fulfilling the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.
If you do not hold an honours degree but have demonstrated the ability to study at postgraduate level, you may also be accepted onto the programme. Postgraduate study tends to be more demanding than undergraduate study, so we recommend that you take only one module at a time, particularly in your first year.
You will also need to be proficient in English, to an IELTS standard of 6.0. If you are unsure you will be able to take a free English test as part of the registration process.
