Postgraduate Certificate in Development Management
This postgraduate certificate is for anyone with an interest in development and a desire to bring about change as it introduces the theory, policy and practice of development management. You will also explore the nature of development from an international perspective. It addresses the needs of development managers as well as other professionals, such as engineers, health workers, educationalists, agriculturalists, bankers, scientists, who need the capacity to manage development if they are to do their work effectively. Completing this course will give you a worthwhile qualification in its own right, and a good foundation to continue to the diploma and MSc in development management.
This postgraduate certificate is designed for people in government, non-governmental organisations, international and inter-governmental agencies and public and private enterprises, who have responsibility for development interventions, programmes and policies. It is also of value for anyone wishing to move into these areas, or who for personal and/or professional reasons want to build up a better understanding of the complex processes labelled ‘development’, with a view to managing those processes better.

Teaching, learning and assessment methods
Knowledge and understanding will be provided through core teaching texts and study guides, with extensive guided reading and debate on audio CDs. There will be activities to help you evaluate texts and to assess your own progress.
Possibilities for engaging in debates and reinforcing learning will be provided by optional day-schools or online tutorials. Formal assessment of these areas will be through assignments and an examination at the end of each course.
Cognitive (or thinking) skills will be developed through the core teaching texts and study guides, and the use of case studies, including audio-visual case studies. Again, there will be optimal reinforcement through day schools and/or online tuition. Assessment will be carried out through assignments and an examination at the end of each course.
For key skills, the teaching around concepts will take place in the module texts. There will also be activities that enable you to identify and evaluate evidence, and how to use it in an argument. Tutors will provide optional support for structuring essays and reports, either through notes to students, day schools and/or online tuition.
Professional skills will be developed through interactive tests and by setting practical activities for you both to practise particular skills and to reflect on their use. You will be expected to use your own experience to reflect on your own professional development. These skills may be enhanced through group activities at optional day schools or online tutorials. Aspects of the formal assessment will require you to provide practical demonstration of your professional skills development.

Managers working in development contexts need the ability to appreciate the diversity and complexity of these contexts and the capacity to bring about good change. They also need the capacity to understand their own role and the roles of others in bringing about change that works. The modules making up this certificate provide an historical and interdisciplinary framework for analysing the contexts in which development interventions take place and a set of skills for planning, implementing and evaluating those interventions. They equip practitioners to make more effective contributions to the policy and practice of their organisations.
