Postgraduate Certificate in Conflict and Development

This postgraduate certificate is for people whose work involves interventions in civil wars or post-war peace support operations: for example, people working in, humanitarian or development organisations or in military agencies. It is also of value for people with a professional and/or personal interest in development more generally, and who see the benefits of learning from ‘extreme’ cases, such as processes related to civil war. It explores the nature of development from an international perspective, presents a framework for looking at the origins of conflict in general and civil war in particular, and provides an introduction to the theory, policy and practice of intervention.

This postgraduate certificate responds to the needs and interests of professionals involved in interventions in conflict situations and for people interested in learning from such interventions.

It offers:

  • a wide-ranging exploration of the contexts in which development takes place
  • a critical review of development management as a discipline
  • an analysis of the complex ways in which conflict is generated
  • an appreciation of the range of skills that contribute to the making of good interventions in conflict situations.

The certificate, like all our qualifications, encourages you to make connections between your learning and your own involvement in development.

The certificate is part of our development management programme, which also offers a Postgraduate Certificate in Development Management (C48), Postgraduate Certificate in Human Rights and Development (C96), Postgraduate Diploma in Development Management (D37) and MSc in Development Management (F11). This 60-credit postgraduate certificate course is available as recognition of postgraduate study for those who, for whatever reason, do not want to continue to the diploma or MSc.

Teaching, learning and assessment methods

Knowledge and understanding of these areas will be provided through core teaching texts and study guides, audiocassette, video and DVD. There will be activities to help you evaluate texts. Possibilities for engaging in debates and reinforcing learning will be provided by day schools or online tutorials. Assessment will be through continuous assessment and an examination.

Your skills will be developed through the core teaching texts and study guides, and the use of printed and audiovisual case studies. Again, there will be reinforcement through day schools and/or online tuition. The teaching around concepts will take place in the module texts. There will also be activities that enable you to identify and evaluate evidence, and show you how to use the evidence in an argument. Tutors will provide support for structuring essays and reports, either through notes to you, through day schools and/or through online tuition. The short optional preparatory course, Preparing for development, is sent automatically to students who study {Development: context and practice [TU871]} and introduces and develops all of these skills from a basic level.

These professional skills will be developed through interactive module tests. You will be set practical activities to enable you to practise both particular skills and to reflect on their use. You will be expected to use your own experience to reflect on your professional development. This will be enhanced through group activities in day schools or in online tutorials, and in the assignments and examination, which will require you to provide a practical demonstration of your skill development.

Career impact

This qualification extends the competences of practitioners working in complex emergencies (in the form of civil war), who are required to fashion interventions that at worst ‘do no harm’, at best contribute to a just and lasting peace. It nurtures an awareness of the discipline, integrity and sensitivity required in such interventions. The modules which make up this certificate offer an historical and interdisciplinary approach for understanding the roots of conflict and a set of skills to do with forming good judgments, making good decisions, building good relationships, negotiating good agreements. The certificate thus offers lessons for managers working not just in conflict situations but in complex, contested contexts more generally.
