Performance Capture

In partnership with The Imaginarium, this exciting new intensive 10 week Certificate in Performance Capture is aimed primarily at graduates and is taught by industry professionals at the NFTS and The Imaginarium (Jungle Book: Origins, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Ryse: Son of Rome, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Fungus the Bogeyman) at Ealing Studios. The course aims to enable students to develop the core practical skills needed for them to become a competent member of a performance capture team for film and games.

Long perceived as a visual effects tool used only in big budget films and video games, the use of performance capture is now becoming more affordable and accessible, offering film, television and games makers exciting new creative possibilities and enabling them to bring vivid imaginative worlds and fantastical characters to the screen.

Training will be delivered through practical hands-on workshops, demonstrations, specialist tutorials, case-studies, screenings, master classes and project work. All sessions will be led by experienced trainers and experts who are active themselves within the field of motion capture production.

Specifically you will learn:

The history of Motion/Performance Capture. Usage of Motion/Performance Capture in Film and Games Fitting performance capture into the animation pipeline. Marker sets. Setting up, system calibration, capturing and editing data. Applying data to a skeleton in motion builder. Editing in Motion Builder. Introduction to facial capture. Motion Capture's role in Pre Visualisation The future of Performance Capture The course is short but very intensive with the main aim being to produce students with the level of animation skills needed to allow them to get jobs as animators within this competitive industry.

THE IMAGINARIUM The Imaginarium is Europe’s leading Performance Capture studio and production company, combining the latest technology with the highest standards of execution to create the ultimate next-generation storytelling capability in film, television, video games and digital applications.

TUTORS The course is led by John Dower and Oliver Hollis-Leick of www.themocapvaults.com, who specialise in training & consultancy in Motion Capture. There will also be additional tutorial input from other Motion Capture experts and animators currently working at the Imaginarium and in other professional contexts.

CURRICULUM

The course is full-time over 10 weeks, starting 22nd February 2016.

Course fee is £3600.

The basic weekly structure is as follows:

  1. Introduction to the course and to Motion Capture
  2. Introduction to Blade capture software and Shoot prep
  3. Production week
  4. Clean up, data sets & Motion Builder workshops
  5. Post Production or Imaginarium Work Placement
  6. Post Production or Imaginarium Work Placement
  7. Post Production or Imaginarium Work Placement
  8. Post Production or Imaginarium Work Placement
  9. Finessing final projects and mentoring
  10. Presentation, Awards, Debrief and Analysis

As part of the course each student will undertake a two-week work placement at The Imaginarium.

The course culminates in the production of a short performance capture sequence being fully realised. In the final week of the course there will be a graduation screening which is open to the industry, giving students the platform to show their work and network with future employers.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants do not necessarily need to have a university Bachelors degree to apply for this course, but must be able to clearly demonstrate a good understanding of computer technology, have a real passion for visual effects and be fully committed to a career in it.
