Program Description

Online Foundation Degree Interior Design

KLC School of Design

The project work moves from residential design to more complex commercial designs as the course progresses and work is submitted and assessed entirely via KLC’s state of the art Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Students can study from anywhere in the world, with webinar groups split into different time zones, everyone gets equal tutor access - no matter where they are nationally or internationally.

The course is designed to foster creativity, originality, reflective practice and intellectual and personal development. The syllabus has been planned to nurture and develop individual potential and to ensure that students acquire the right skills for employment. Early work will include thinking for design, an introduction to academic writing and projects to help students understand the benefits of research in the design process

In addition to gaining technical knowledge and skills and developing an understanding of interior design methods and processes, the aim will also be to encourage students to adopt an analytical approach and to develop their critical skills. The way in which design histories and theories together with cultural, environmental and social context can influence and be applied to a given situation will also be explored.

Great emphasis is placed on design process from taking the client brief, site survey, design analysis, conceptual and design development through to implementation and the final evaluation of a project. Students are introduced to drawing conventions and learn how to produce 2D and 3D drawings, both by hand and CAD generated, and to master 3D visualisation techniques, scale models and other methods of visual presentation. The use of sketching, design developmental drawings and computing to generate 2D and 3D models are encouraged in the later projects and students also learn to produce detailed working drawings which are now a vital part of a designer's toolkit for bespoke areas of work.

AutoCAD is used across a wide range of industries, by architects, project managers, engineers, designers, and other professionals. Skills and confidence in AutoCAD 2D are gained throughout the course. These software drawing skills are combined with learning competencies in SketchUp, InDesign and Photoshop.

In keeping with the KLC practical approach, students are also introduced to the all-important practical elements of interior design. These include building construction, regulation and consents, services, audio-visual installations, accessibility and inclusive design.

Great emphasis is placed on accessing creativity and aspects of the course particularly enjoyed by students include the effective application of colour and light, materials and finishes and consideration of design psychology.

Design projects are based on a variety of realistic residential and commercial spaces such as restaurants, bars, hotels, spas, retail and listed buildings. The resultant presentational material will form a comprehensive design portfolio including examples of all the skills which students have acquired during the course. To support their project work students will explore strategies for successful communication with clients through visual, written and spoken means.

The group project encourages team work, budgets, time management and formal board level presentations are included in this section of the course. The final design project requires students to work autonomously on a space and apply a full range of design skills acquired and showcase their knowledge of professional practice, technologies and current trends.

"The way in which the course is structured is informative but enjoyable, and the videos and webinars make things feel more manageable."
Jess Fuery, Student
