International Foundation Programme - An excellent preparation for international students wishing to progress to university degree courses in the UK. These include Law, Business, Electronic Engineering, Psychology and Biochemistry.

The various pathways are designed to enable international students to progress onto a wide range of courses at university. Successful students are awarded a Diploma which is widely accepted by UK universities, and our students can apply to many different institutions. What you will study

You will study on one of four pathways: Humanities, Science, Business, and Art and Design. You will have a choice of units within each pathway.

Study Skills: this unit aims to develop study skills and learning strategies that will serve you well when you are working at undergraduate level.

The four available pathways are:

Humanities: Mandatory units in Social Science and Humanities Research Methods and a Research project. Choose three units from English Language, History, Psychology and Sociology.

Science: Mandatory units in Mathematics for Scientists and a Research project. Choose three units from Core Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics

Business: All units mandatory: Business and Marketing Research Techniques, Academic Research Project/Dissertation. Subject units: Business Communication, Finance Awareness, Law, Managing People, Understanding Business Organisations.

Art and Design: You have the option to take a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design which includes units in:

  • Textiles and Fashion Design (printed textiles, constructed textiles, theatre costume)

  • Visual Communication (graphic design, AV, illustration, photography, animation)

  • 3D Design and Crafts (furniture, ceramics, jewellery, product and interior design)

You will receive advice and guidance on choosing your options when you apply for the International Foundation Programme.

How you will learn

Units will be taught through lectures, class discussions, group work, practical work where appropriate and independent study. Classes will be of mixed nationality and a range of ages from 17+.

How you will be assessed

The course is unit based and you gain credits when you satisfactorily complete a subject. Assessment takes place through assignments and examinations.

Entry Requirements

  • Completion of your home country's Secondary Education (this requirement may be waived for high achieving students)

  • A minimum IELTS score of 5.5 (or equivalent)

  • Aged 17 years or over at the beginning of the programme

Further study

The Access to HE courses have excellent progression in terms of entry into universities. Most of the students study at local HE institutions such as Leeds, Leeds Metropolitan, Huddersfield, Bradford, Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam universities. Many also take advantage of internal progression opportunities offered via degree course provision at Wakefield College itself. Access to HE courses are nationally recognised qualifications and are therefore accepted by universities across the country.

Students from Access to HE courses progress on to a wide diversity of degrees in subjects such as Business, Law, Psychology, Counselling, History, Biochemistry, and Electronic Engineering. Career opportunities

Students who complete Access to HE qualifications and subsequently complete degree course places enter a range of undergraduate professional careers. These include primary teaching, social work, nursing, business management and continue with post graduate career development in both the public and private sector.
