Graduate Foundation Studies in Psychology - Professional Development

Graduate Foundation Studies in Psychology is a conversion course for graduates who wish to join the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in Psychological Studies but who do not have sufficient background in the subject (60 previous credits in psychology) to be accepted directly onto the PgDip.

The programme is flexible and not all students will need to take the full course, depending on their previous academic studies.

By studying on this course, you will learn some of the core principles of psychology and also methods of research in the subject, which will provide you with the foundation for further study. Successful completion of the course confers 60 credits in psychology and ensures automatic eligibility for the PgDip in Psychological Studies if you achieve an average mark of at least 50% over the three modules.

About the course

The Department of Psychology is very well established and the undergraduate degree is one of the oldest psychology degrees in the country.

A large proportion of your study will be with full and part-time undergraduate BSc (Hons) Psychology students. In addition, you may have the opportunity to join with other students on the foundation course by facilitating study groups for mutual support and exchange of information.

As you will have already completed study at degree level it is assumed you will have a greater level of independence than an undergraduate student and there is an element of flexibility in relation to when, and in what order, you will study your modules.

The course is designed as a pre-requisite for those applying for the PgDip in Psychological Studies who do not have 60 previous credits in psychology at degree level.

Special features

  • There is some flexibility in relation to when and in what order you will study your modules.
  • Successful completion of the course ensures automatic transfer to the PgDip in Psychological Studies if you achieve an average mark of at least 50% over the three modules.

What you will learn

You will be introduced to some of the core principles of psychology and also gain an insight into methods of psychological research.

What you will study

The course consists of three modules, drawn from Level 1 of the BSc (Hons) Psychology degree course:

  • Introduction to Research Methods;

  • Understanding the Person.

Entry requirements
