This course is intended to cater for those who aspire to enrol on a social science-based Higher National Diploma (HND) or Honours degree programme within the Cardiff School of Health Sciences or the School of Education at Cardiff Metropolitan University. It is designed for those who have not achieved the required number of A-level points (A2 or their equivalent). It is also suitable for those who have studied A-level subjects (or their equivalent) in areas that do not provide the necessary background within the scientific disciplines required for the chosen Honours degree programme.
This course is also intended to widen access and participation for 'return to learning' students who wish to embark upon an Honours degree programme.
The course will form an integral part of certain honours degree programmes delivered within the Cardiff School of Health Sciences or Education. Undertaking the foundation year will mean that the relevant full-time honours degree or HND will take one extra year to complete. The foundation year will act as a year 0 and students wishing to undertake the foundation will apply for the relevant degree programme, using the relevant UCAS code for that programme and apply for entry point 0 on the UCAS website.
Learning & Teaching
A variety of teaching strategies will be employed to reflect the requirements of the particular topic; variety of student learning styles; existence of professional experience within the group; and the level and type of study required over the programme.
Approaches include lectures, small group work, practical sessions, use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), workshops, tutorials and independent learning.
Students are expected to engage through regular attendance at teaching/learning sessions and completion of assigned tasks.
Each module that you undertake is assessed in order to demonstrate and provide evidence for your academic achievement. The nature of the assessment varies according to its nature and purpose, but a wide variety of assessment methods are employed such that students experience as many types as possible in preparation for their progression pathways.
Assessments strategies include:
Examinations - These can consist of academic essays, multiple choice questions and short answer questions.
Coursework - This may include academic essays, research reports, class tests, presentations, posters, case studies, reflective assignments and portfolios.
Specific assessments for each module will be outlined in module handbooks and further supported during teaching/learning sessions.
