Program Description

Europe in Motion

European Summer School Prague

The European Summer School in Prague is an intensive 10 day learning programme focused on European integration. It is organized by one of the leading think-tanks in Prague, EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy, in co-operation with Prague College, the Charles University Faculty of Social Sciences and under the auspices of the European Commission Representation in the Czech Republic. This year’s European Summer School is titled “Europe in Motion”.

How are current challenges changing the dynamics of the European integration? Facing the consequences of the debt crisis, current migration wave and security situation in the neighbourhood, is the EU moving towards more or less Europe? Find out in Prague, at the 14th annual European Summer School!

The team of ESS 2016 is looking forward to welcoming you to Prague this summer!

The first European Summer School took place in 2003. Since then, the programme has been assessed and updated regularly, based on our experience and students' feedback, with a sincere wish to make it as useful and enjoyable as possible. The proof of our success in this mission is simple - we are happy to invite you to already the 13th year of the European Summer School!

The topics differ from year to year, but the common denominator of our summer school programme stays the same – European integration. The second constantly present unique aspect is the Central European perspective that our lecturers offer. Every year, we invite experts from Slovakia, Poland and Hungary to join their Czech colleagues in sharing their views with the students.

Over the years, Central Europe's relation to the European Union has changed significantly. At the beginning, we were just candidate countries - now we have already celebrated the 10th anniversary of accession. And every summer, related news and recent developments were discussed at the European Summer School. Join us this year!

Topics 2016

The title of this 2016 summer school is Europe in Motion. All lectures and workshops of the academic program will deal with the dynamics that are currently shaping the European integration – we will discuss internal and external implications of the current migration wave, economic developments, future course of the integration and other topics that are crucial for understanding the EU’s position in the changing world.

The lectures will be divided thematically into three modules, covering the most challenging areas of today – EU’s external relations, internal political challenges and economic aspects of the integration. Various lectures will debate following questions and topics.

EU and the International dynamics – EU in the world

  • Divided Europe as a result of the migration wave – rhetoric and arguments of old and new Member States
  • EU and the humanitarian crisis in the neighbourhood – rethinking the ENP
  • EU and Russia – allies or enemies?

Internal challenges – what kind of EU do we want?

  • How to (re)build a trust among the EU-28? Do we see a crisis of the EU or of the Member States?
  • Energy security – rare consensus?
  • Internal security – which limits of cooperation, appeared after Paris attacks?
  • “European values” vs. security – the card of public opinion

Economic aspects of the integration – Is the EU still mainly economic project?

  • Austerity vs. Growth – lessons of the debt crisis
