Urban Planning

A course is the study of a particular topic within a wider subject area and is the foundation of a qualification. A typical course includes lectures, assessments and tutorials.

As people are moving into cities, there is a greater need for the planning of new urban districts. In a master's of urban planning program, you will gain a wide breadth of knowledge including building design, planning history, real estate laws.

Europe is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the western most point of Eurasia, Europe is usually divided from Asia by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways connecting the Black and Aegean Seas.

Rationale of the Training Course - Eco-Cities: Policies for Sustainable Energy

Half the world’s population now live in built-up areas, with an estimated 60 million people being added every year. This rapid urban growth leads to environmental degradation and excessive demands on services and infrastructure. Energy consumption has increased drastically. To address this it is necessary to develop sustainable urban energy policies and best practices in efficient land use, transport, sustainable buildings and sustainable development overall.

Rationale of the Training Course - Developing Social Housing Projects

One of the characteristics of developing countries is fast growing cities and the lack of affordable and adequate housing. Social housing policies try to address the housing problem but have often been implemented in such ways that the people in real need are not reached and/or the social housing projects do not improve the overall living conditions of people or lack a contribution to sustainable urban development o their problems. Developing and therefore allowing for better implementation of social housing contributes directly to the living conditions and to the growth of cities in the developing world.

Architecture and Urbanism

The buildings and sites to be visited are an example of an efficient use of technology and energy saving. They are all part of the change in the architectural model that is contributing to improve the daily life of the citizens and the city services management. [+]

One course in two cities! The course examines the architecture and urbanism of two European cities (Barcelona and Almere) with a very different cultural and historical background. Barcelona was founded as a Roman city and has been growing through the ages; Almere is the youngest city in The Netherlands and has jumped straight into the future. But there is something they have in common: they both put innovation into perspective and have sustainability in the core business of their development. Dates and Schedule Week 1: from 06.07.2015 to 10.07.2015 Week 2: from 13.07.2015 to 17.07.2015 Course Level: Basic to Intermediate Credits: This course delivers 2.5 ECTS per stage + Certificate of Attendance The buildings and sites to be visited are an example of an efficient use of technology and energy saving. They are all part of the change in the architectural model that is contributing to improve the daily life of the citizens and the city services management. Barcelona has always been an important centre of business and culture and such traits can be traced in its urbanism and architecture: from the Roman colony, Barcino, and the still remaining walls to the middle age town with the revolutionary constructions in Catalan gothic style. From the expansion of the city in the XIX century with the Cerdà Plan, that was the framework in which Modernism was developed, to the end of the XX century, when the city reinvented itself again with the Olimpic vila and the 22@ neighbourhood. Almere has established an international reputation as a cradle of modern architecture. Some of the world’s most renowned architects have left their lasting marks on the city. Their ambitious and innovative creations have transformed the city into a showcase of the 21st century urban design, with relevant buildings and experimental housing projects. Experts Fedde Huistra and Bas Ten Brinke. Methodology The sessions on Urbanism and Architecture: Aspects of Sustainability will mostly be taught on site, with the support of some in-house lectures to provide the necessary background and overview. Students are encouraged to ask questions, actively participate in discussions, and comment on the reading materials assigned. Objectives Know first hand how new technologies are being applied in intelligent buildings and smart cities Experience what architects and town planners are doing to create a more sustainable environment Understand the benefits that the city can offer through the shift from a traditional to a sustainable and intelligent model Who should attend? Everyone interested in a sustainable approach of architecture and town development, with no or limited background in this field of expertise Price per stage* € 750 – Course + Course materials * A discount will be applied in case both stages are attended. Educational program: Open Thesis Fabrication

Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC)
Campus Full time 16 weeks September 2017 Spain Barcelona

This program is for students and professionals who are interested in developing a specific research agenda in the field of digital design and fabrication, in an experimental environment that provides the spatial and technological means to execute it. [+]

Educational program: Open Thesis Fabrication

In design, architecture and many other disciplines, Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) fabrication equipment has given designers unprecedented means for executing formally challenging projects directly from the computer. By surpassing the limitations imposed by manufacturing systems based on standardization, the impact of these technologies has fundamentally challenged the paradigm of production, thus opening a wide field of research and experimentation practices and unimaginable design opportunities. In this new context, IAAC has been a leading academic institution  by incorporating these technologies as part of its research agenda and work environment with a Fab-Lab that is equipped with several large scale CNC machines (laser cutters, CNC Milling Machines, 3D printers, etc) and spaces for prototyping in a large industrial warehouse setting. Since its creation, IAAC’s potential for fabrication experiments has been largely explored, yet it was fully demonstrated with the development of the world-acknowledged 1:1 prototype of the Solar House (Solar Decathlon, 2010), which was entirely produced within its own facilities. With the intention to continue this agenda, in 2010 IAAC launched a 16-week intensive research program for individual participants called OPEN THESIS FABRICATION (OTF).... International postgraduate program of Advanced Studies in Urbanism and Real Estate Development (ASURED)

Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism (UAUIM)
Campus Full time 18 months October 2017 Romania Bucharest

A Program with Unique Features - ASURED is one of the few international programs worldwide offering education in both urban planning and real estate development within the same program. [+]

The international postgraduate program of Advanced Studies in Urbanism and Real Estate Development (ASURED) is specifically designed for RICS accreditation which was granted on July 18, 2014. RICS (The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, London 1868) is a prestigious real estate and urban planning accreditation body. The 15 European, U.S. and Romanian faculty interact face-to-face with the students in “concentration periods” of two weeks at the CEP facility in Bucharest, a historic monument built at the beginning of the 20th century. Each course takes three days and a follow-up period of supervision, advice and grading. Two integrated projects in urbanism and real estate development, workshops on urban development simulation and legal aspects of urban development, a practicum and the final thesis complete the program. The first class of the ASURED Program of 12 students, started in October 2013. Enrollment includes Romanian students (graduates of programs in architecture, urban planning, real estate, engineering and political science) and two international students from Spain and the USA. A Program with Unique Features - ASURED is one of the few international programs worldwide offering education in both urban planning and real estate development within the same program. Other similar programs are located in London, Glasgow, Miami and St. Louis. Unlike the other programs, ASURED is unique in that it offers a teaching staff mix from Western and Eastern Europe, and the U.S. Opportunities for graduates: The ASURED's graduates are expected to engage in international urban planning and development practices, real estate activities, advising mayors, politicians, planning boards and developers, teaching urban planning and real estate and conducting audits and research.
