General English for International students (Elementary to Upper Intermediate) This course is for international students who wish to improve their English language skills in a supportive and English speaking environment in the UK. We offer courses at Elementary (equivalent to A2 or IELTS band 3.0), Intermediate (equivalent to B1 or IELTS bands 3.5-4.5) and Upper Intermediate (equivalent to B2 or IELTS band 5.0-6.0) levels. Students will undertake an initial assessment to determine their current level of English, and will then study in a class which matches their current level of English. Regular weekly reviews and tests will be undertaken to encourage students to revise new language and provide a measure of progress. This course of study will include IELTS preparation. Location Salisbury City Campus Aims of the course The course aims are to develop your language abilities and skills in the following areas: Grammar - Students will work on all aspects of grammar according to level, including the tense system, modal verbs, comparing and contrasting, conditional sentences and discrete language items as required. Vocabulary - Students will acquire new words according to topic focus and individual needs. Example topics are; city life, food & drink, communication, education, travel, family life, work and current affairs. Speaking & Listening skills - Lessons will provide outcomes where students become more confident in speaking and listening. They will improve in fluency, accuracy and have pronunciation instruction for greater clarity. Improvement in this area will complement their grammar and vocabulary development. Writing aims - From basic sentence construction to complex phrases and text organisation, students will be able to produce written work with greater accuracy and confidence. Text types include formal and informal letters, job applications and emails. Reading aims - Students will learn how to use text to enhance vocabulary and as a means of guided discovery of language items. They will also develop reading skills such as skimming and scanning. Functions of English - Students will learn how to operate in English using a variety of functions, such as making requests, giving advice, sharing opinions and expressing feelings. Intercultural Communication - A special feature of the course is a weekly lesson focused on politeness and cultural similarities/differences.
