Foundation Course in Professional Contemporary Dance (QCF Level 1-4) Dates: Sept 2015 - July 2016 Hours: 18 hours per week Schedule: Thursday & Friday; or Mon & Wed evenings and Saturday Cost: £3,245 Our new foundation course in professional contemporary dance, is an intensive course for students looking for part-time, high-quality practical dance training. The course is delivered either over two full days, or over evenings and weekends, which enables students to continue to work or to undertake further study. This is a practical course, which aims to develop students contemporary dance technique and performance skills. Each week students will participate in 11 practical classes: 6 contemporary technique dance classes; 2 classical ballet technique classes; 2 body conditioning classes (such as pilates or yoga); and 1 creative/choreography class. Each term students will have the opportunity to learn three contemporary dance techniques, such as Graham-based, Cunningham, Horton, Limon and release techniques. Students will have the opportunity to share their learning and perform the work created at the end of each term. There are no formal entrance requirements. Candidates will be expected to have some practical experience in contemporary dance and will be selected based on their commitment and desire to undertake the training, demonstrated on their completed application form. Students may choose to undertake nationally recognised dance qualifications, from a QCF Level 1 Certificate up to QCF Level 4 Diploma (equivalent of the first year of an undergraduate degree). Applications close: 30 June 2015. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the application by: 10 July 2015 Who is the course for? The course is for young people and adults (aged 16+) interested in developing their contemporary dance technique and performance skills. The course is suitable for people with a range of experiences: dancers who might be interested in a professional career, preparing for auditions or interested in full time vocational training; those who would like to pursue a career in community dance, or dance teaching; and those who would like to emerge themselves in dance training for personal or professional development. We particularly encourage applications from mature students who might feel that their age is a barrier to applying for vocational dance training. Students will be grouped according to their experience and level of ability. Initially, students will be allocated a group based on the information provided in their application form. Students will assessed during the first few weeks of the term to ensure they are placed in the correct group, and re-allocated, if necessary. Entry requirements There are no formal entrance requirements and no audition. Candidates will be expected to have some practical experience in contemporary dance or ballet and will be selected based on their commitment and motivation to undertake the training, as demonstrated on the completed application form. This is an intensive course and we do not recommend it for absolute beginners. If you have no experience of contemporary dance, we suggest you undertake some classes prior to applying, to ensure that contemporary dance is the right option for you. Course content This is a practical course, focused on improving students dance technique and performance skills. Each week, students will participate in 11 practical classes, including contemporary and classical technique classes, body conditioning and creative choreography sessions. Part-time syllabus 6 x contemporary technique classes (styles will vary each term) 2 x classical ballet technique classes 2 x body conditioning classes (such as Pilates or yoga) 1 x creative/choreography class Each term students will have the opportunity to learn three contemporary dance techniques, such as Graham-based, Cunningham, Horton, Limon and release techniques. Students will also have one “free”/non-scheduled session each week, which will be used for a variety of purposes throughout the year, for example: group tutorials and one-to-ones with course tutors; preparing the portfolio of evidence; assessment preparations; rehearsals; and workshops/masterclasses. Students will have the opportunity to share their learning and perform the work they have created during the creative/choreography sessions at the end of each term. What qualification/s will I achieve? The foundation course is a flexible programme and students may undertake a variety of qualifications, dependent on their level of prior experience and qualifications. The following qualifications are on offer: Level 1 Certificate in Performance Skills Using Dance (equivalent to GCSE grades DG or foundation diploma) Level 2 Certificate in Performance Skills Using Dance (equivalent to GCSE grades A-C or first diploma) Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Performance Skills (equivalent to A-Level or extended diploma) – attracts UCAS points (tbc) Level 4 Diploma in Performing – Contemporary Dance (equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree or HNC) Students undertake the qualifications at their own pace. A student with limited dance experience might wish to start at Level 1 in the first term and progress through to Level 2 and 3 throughout the year. Students with more dance experience, or with existing qualifications, may choose to start at Level 3 or Level 4. To achieve the Level 4 qualification, students will be expected to demonstrate good technical ability and performance skills, at the equivalent standard of a first year undergraduate degree. Only those students that can demonstrate this standard will be permitted to undertake the Level 4 qualification. Participation in the qualifications is optional and students may complete the training without undertaking any qualification. Duration of course and hours of study This is a one year course, delivered over thirty-six weeks. The course is structured around school term times and students will break during half-term. The term dates for 2015/2016 are: Term 1: 14 Sept - 20 Dec 2015 (half term 26 - 30 Oct) Term 2: 4 Jan - 24 March 2016 (half term 15 - 19 Feb) Term 3: 11 Apr - 10 July 2016 (half term 30 May - 3 June) Students may choose to study at evenings and weekends or during the day. Evening/weekend Monday evening: 17:30 – 21:45 Wednesday evening: 17:30 – 21:45 Saturday: 9:00 – 18:00 Day Thursday: 9:00 – 18:00 Friday: 9:00 – 18:00 Students undertaking qualifications will be required to spend additional hours of personal time to complete their portfolio of evidence and to prepare and rehearse for their practical assessments and examinations.
