Course Studies 2017 in Illinois USA. Overview The Institute of Aviation at Parkland College maintains a high level of quality in order to ensure the best outcomes for students. Located in Champaign, Illinois and with the help of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Frasca International, the Institute of Aviation at Parkland College is a leading collegiate flight school in Illinois and the only higher education institution in central Illinois with an aviation program. Located at Willard Airport, approximately eight miles from Parkland College’s main campus, the Institute of Aviation facility houses classrooms, student offices, various flight simulators, and air fleet. The fleet consists of 17 single engine Piper archers, seven Piper Arrows, three multi-engine Piper Seminoles and two Cessna 152s. Career Outlook With the impending influx of pilot retirements coupled with global growth in the aviation industry, there is a shortage of qualified pilots in the U.S. and internationally. In fact, according to Aviation Week, more than 20,000 pilot jobs are expected to open within the next seven years and these are conservative estimates. These jobs needs to be filled in order to ensure that smaller regional airlines can continue to offer service. It is argued that now maybe the best time to pursue and obtain your pilot education and flight training. Parkland’s Aviation Program The Institute of Aviation at Parkland offers an associate’s degree in aviation as well as opportunities for certification as a private pilot, instrument-rated pilot, commercial pilot, multiengine-rated pilot, and flight instructor. The associate’s degree prepares students to transfer to a four-year institution to earn a bachelor’s degree. Associate degree students will sequentially earn the private pilot certificate, instrument rating, commercial pilot certificate, and multiengine rating during the program. There is also the opportunity to earn flight instructor certificates for airplane, instrument, and multiengine. Graduates may enter the workforce upon graduation in jobs such as aerial photography and flight instruction. After completing FAA flight time requirements, graduates will be qualified to become airline pilots. Program Structure For most aviation courses, students meet for approximately two hours a week in a classroom where they will learn about aircraft systems, rules and regulations, and aviation fundamentals. Students also meet at Willard Airport for three 2-hour flight periods a week where they receive hands-on experience flying an aircraft to learn flight maneuvers, takeoffs and landings, and cross-country flight. Aviation courses are offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters accordingly. Program Entry Requirements TSA requirements for all non- U.S. citizens The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires non-citizens to participate in the Alien Flight Student Program (AFSP). Non-native speakers of English All students who are non-native speakers of English must establish English language proficiency through TOEFL (iBt) scores: overall 85 or higher with minimum 22 listening and minimum 26 speaking. Medical Exam Before enrolling and flying an aircraft, students will need to obtain an aviation medical certificate from an FAA-certified aviation medical examiner (AME). There are three classes of aviation medical certificates: Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. Class 1 is the most restrictive; Class 3 is the least restrictive. Aviation medical examinations are conducted by FAA-approved physicians. Parkland College requires that prospective students, at minimum, pass a Class 3 physical examination prior to enrolling for their first course. Any class of medical certificate with a student pilot certificate is acceptable. University Pathways is an intensive English learning program that concentrates on the four basic components of language – reading, writing, listening and speaking; while also providing cultural information to prepare students for success in U.S. universities. Students who successfully complete the University Pathways program have the option to be admitted directly to Greenville College. Curriculum The goal of the University Pathways curriculum of instruction is to develop the English language skills of its students in order for them to be successful in their studies in the United States. The program consists of five levels of instruction. Each level of the program becomes more challenging as students are expected to grow and develop their English language skills. Each level lasts seven weeks and students attend class six to seven hours each day. Class sizes are small to ensure individual attention. Typically, University Pathways classes have no more than ten students. Level 1: Beginning Level 2: Low-intermediate Level 3: Intermediate Level 4: High-intermediate Level 5: Advanced All new students will automatically be placed in level 1 until they arrive on campus and complete the placement test. Following this test, students may be moved up to level 2 or higher based on their scores on the test. There is not a minimum TOEFL score requirement to be admitted to program, but students should demonstrate basic English skills. All the levels in the program develop the following skills: Reading skills to comprehend academic reading materials and answer questions in class and on exams. Cultural information about life in the United States, including important information on the values and beliefs of the general American population. Students are promoted to the next level if they obtain an overall average grade of at least 75% for all of their classes offered in that level, and must advance through level 5 to graduate from the program. The 75% is based on all work the student has completed in all classes within the level – all assignments, quizzes, exams, etc. Students must repeat a level until they have successfully completed the coursework at that level. Because we believe it is essential for the students to be able to comprehend college level texts in English, write well-developed papers, and comprehend spoken English; we require students to earn a passing grade of 75% or above in two very important classes in Levels 1-4 (Reading and Writing; Listening and Speaking) and three very important classes in Level 5 (Reading; Writing; and Listening and Note-Taking). Students must receive a passing grade of at least 75% in these specific classes, regardless of obtaining an overall average of 75%. Reading strategies By improving writing, listening, and reading comprehension skills, all ESL programs are designed to help prepare students for participation in U.S. college and university courses. CSI Offers instructor-led lectures, instructor-led labs, computer-based materials, and project-based learning sessions. This method allows students to learn English and reach their goals more efficiently. Learning Levels ESL programs consist of three progressive level programs: Beginner ESL Intermediate ESL Advanced ESL Each level is three academic quarters (33 academic weeks) in length. Students are guided by instructors while practicing fundamental language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In lecture and lab classes, students are taught how to use new grammar and vocabulary to describe simple, “everyday” topics and to become comfortable interacting with classmates, teachers, and native English speakers. Students with placement exam scores of 0-50 are placed in Beginner ESL. Beginner Vocabulary and Conversation Course Length: 1 Quarter or 11 academic weeks Beginner Writing and Grammar Course Length: 1 Quarter or 11 academic weeks Beginner Reading Strategies Course Length: 1 Quarter or 11 academic weeks Intermediate ESL – 1 Year/33 weeks/3 quarters Tuition – $3,600 per year or $1,200 per quarter Book Fee and Supply Fee – $90 per quarter English learners at the Intermediate level build on their existing language skills in reading and listening, and focus on more accurately expressing themselves in writing and conversation. In lecture and lab classes, students gain knowledge that will help them become more confident interacting in a variety of situations at a proficient level. After successfully completing Intermediate ESL, students have further program options, such as the Academic and Skill Building Programs. Students with placement exam scores of 51-76 are placed in Intermediate ESL. Intermediate Vocabulary and Conversation Course Length: 1 Quarter or 11 academic weeks Intermediate Writing and Grammar Course Length: 1 Quarter or 11 academic weeks Intermediate Reading Strategies Course Length: 1 Quarter or 11 academic weeks Advanced ESL – 1 Year/33 weeks/3 quarters Tuition – $3,600 per year or $1,200 per quarter Book Fee and Supply Fee – $90 per quarter Advanced-level students are taught how to use higher level vocabulary in writing and conversation and are able to discuss complex topics. Advanced ESL students use critical thinking skills to engage in in-depth discussions on a wide range of subjects; they also learn conversational and idiomatic language that allows them to interact more naturally with native speakers. Upon completing this class, students are prepared to enter a variety of courses. Students with placement exam scores of 77-90 are placed in Advanced ESL.
