ELI Mission The core program of the GGC English Language Institute (ELI) aims primarily to support F-1 undergraduate international students, domestic students, or others interested in learning English who may not yet meet the requirements for college admission and who need to develop academic English. Students who complete the Intensive English Program (IEP) curriculum are prepared for college-level work in an English-speaking higher educational institution. Students who study in the Everyday English Program (EEP) may take courses to develop their spoken English, along with reading and writing, for professional or personal purposes or for possible future study. Special short-term programs (STP) provide groups or individuals with tailored instruction and immersive English language experiences. CLASS INFORMATION AND SCHEDULES Classes are small, with an average of 8 to 12 participants per class, and usually no more than 15. Classes prepare you for success in an American college or university and introduce you to U.S. culture and university life. Classes meet 20 hours a week, on average four to five hours each day, Monday through Friday. You will be assigned to one of three curriculum levels, based on your placement test results. Participants must spend additional time preparing and studying for their classes, and those who have successfully completed one level will be promoted to the next level. Classes begin at 9:30 a.m. and run through mid-afternoon. Mandatory classes are always finished before 3 p.m. Grammar English grammar is taught and practiced through a variety of communicative and functional activities. Reading and Writing Courses focus on building vocabulary, reading, and study skills with level-appropriate materials. You will learn and practice techniques that will help you develop the writing skills necessary for academic success. Speaking and Listening Communicative activities will help you improve your comprehension and expression of spoken English and reinforce vocabulary and pronunciation.
