The Extended Engineering and Technology Degree Programme (Initial Year) is designed for students who missed out on a BEng or BSc programme in Engineering or who may want to change their curriculum area following A Levels or equivalent study. It is offered in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire and following successful study at College in the Initial Year, students will be given an opportunity to progress to the range of BEng and BSc Engineering and Technology degrees available at Hertfordshire ranging from; Aerospace (including Pilot Studies), Mechanical, Automotive, Motorsport, Electrical and Electronic Engineering to Digital and Computer Engineering. All the Engineering and Technology degree routes at Hertfordshire are accredited, leading to Chartered or Incorporated status. And can be completed (including the Initial Year at College), in four or five years if a sandwich/ industry placement year is included. What qualifications or experience do I need ? As a guide, you need a minimum 120 UCAS points PLUS 5 GCSEs including English, Mathematics and a Science at grade C or above. A minimum IELTS score of 6.0, TOEFL 550, is required for those for whom English is not their first language. Students unsure of their tariff points can contact the College/University for guidance. Please ensure that you have an accurate list of all your qualifications; dates, boards, etc., and that you can provide copies of the relevant certificates if asked. What will I study ? This course will cover the following topics over two semesters (A&B) made up of 13 teaching weeks each: Semester A: Mathematics 1, Engineering Science, Digital and Software Applications in Engineering and Engineering Studies and Skills Semester B: Mathematics 2, Mechanical Science, Electrical Science and Digital Technology and Engineering Project Two of the above (Engineering Studies and Skills and the Engineering Project), are taught at the University. Giving you a chance to see what real university study is like while still at College where the rest of your study will take place. Personal and group tutorial sessions are also planned and built into the timetable and with access to both the College and University study facilities; there is plenty of support offered to assist you completing assignments etc. How will I be assessed ? Assessment is by coursework and examination. Your coursework contributes 40 percent and examinations 60 percent to your total. A typical set of coursework might consist of two assignments and two open book tests, all completed over the 13 week study period with an exam in that subject at the end. The final mark is an aggregate of these two elements in most cases (coursework and exam), the idea being to give you plenty of practice in the sort of assessments that you need have confidence in before beginning your full degree study. What qualifications could I achieve ? On successful completion of this course, students will achieve the appropriate standard for progression to the range of BEng or BSc Degree Programmes offered at the University of Hertfordshire. How do I join the course ? Applications are through UCAS; however, any applications to the College will be forwarded to the University Admissions Tutor for processing. Will I need an interview ? If you clearly meet the entry criteria and/or are predicted to reach the required exam grades, then you will not need an interview.
