Overview Acting and Irish Theatre is a course for international students who wish to expand, explore and deepen their awareness of Irish Theatre This course is aimed at theatre and acting students around the world who wish to explore and experience Irish Theatre while immersed in its native context. This course is worth 10 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits towards any third level drama qualification. Participants on the course will engage with some of Ireland’s greatest writers, both classic and contemporary, including Sean O’Casey, Samuel Beckett, Brian Friel, Conor McPherson and Marina Carr; studying the literary and performance context of each play. Acting, Voice and Movement classes are taught by leading Irish directors and dramaturgues and will focus on the unique demands of performing Irish plays. Voice classes will focus on the particular requirements of Irish texts including a wide range of Irish contemporary and historic dialects. The actor will explore how movement in different Irish plays changes relative to culture, dress, dance, beliefs and environment. Students will engage with the physical embodiment of work as well as concepts of past-time and the muscularity of text. Overview This course is also suitable for people who work within amateur theatre and are interested in improving their stage management and technical knowledge. The areas covered in this course will reflect the key subjects covered in the Bachelor in Stage Management and Technical Theatre course at The Lir including Managing the Stage This one day workshop will introduce participants to the roles of the Stage & Production Manager and will identify how the team of CSM, DSM and ASM are divided into roles and responsibilities. It will detail the basics of running a rehearsal room, of blocking, prompting and reporting and participants will also create a prompt copy. Technology and the Stage Exploring stage technologies, lighting and sound. A one day workshop covering the principles and practices in lighting a small theatre production including rigging and focusing theatre lanterns and programming the operating desk. The course will include practical sessions as well as presentations from the tutor. There will also be a focus on sound design covering what sound is and how it can be managed, systems and equipment and how to use them and the basics involved in setting up the sound for a theatre production. Making the Stage This two day workshop is broken down into Designing the Stage and Constructing the Stage. Designing the stage looks at the considerations to be taken into account when starting out the design process including access, resources, size of the space etc., creating design concepts and the importance of model boxes that easily communicate the large scale stage design and preparing suitably detailed plans for construction, props, costume and scenic departments. Constructing the stage will include an introduction to modern stagecraft and construction as well as practical sessions on stage and set work. Dressing the Stage Participants will be given a brief history on costume and costume design for theatre throughout the years and will learn about planning, designing, creating and finding clothing including period costumes, footwear, jewellery, wigs etc for the actors. DESCRIPTION of “COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE, ARTE DELLA COMMEDIA” Commedia dell’Arte means theatre and not only this, dramaturgy of social life, and Art means profession, actor discipline. It is a kind of living theatre which keeps evolving, acting in human field of its time. In the theatre the word is connected to the action and the actor is the one who acts. Nowadays, the Commedia dell’Arte keeps operating as an independent category but in particular it is essential in the education and comprehension of theatrical action in author’s text for those who care about theatre. Six months abroad at EUTHECA is for everyone who wants to deepen in theory and practice, the exploration of a close connection between Commedia dell’ Arte and European Dramaturgy. AIMS: The aim is to give the student a more complete comprehension of the playwright’s work, considered not only in the scenario of a European theatre context, but how it is applied in the contemporary scenario and generally related to the work of the actor. Acquire comic interpretations and the mask techniques with or without the mask (Pantalone, Capitano, Dottore, Zanni, Arlecchino, Pulcinella, Colombina ecc.) through a postural, gestural and advanced vocal training Acquire breathing techniques and vocal emission Acquire the rudiments of fencing and stage combat. Acquire tools and techniques to be used in the creation of a characterization. Understand the works of key playwrights such as William Shakespeare, Molière, Carlo Goldoni. Recognizing in the text those conditions which move the action on the scene, assume theme on yourself, and act on the scene by improvising at first hand with the aim of , paradoxally, improvising the author’s written text. After managed correctly the action impulses, and built the rich and complex parts for the role, the student is supposed to return and give the text in return as well as it was written by the author, paying attention even to the atmosphere, characterization, style of the selected play.
