Intensive English Program This 15 or 16-week academic program provides twenty hours of classroom instruction and 5 hours of lab per week for students who need to significantly improve their English to study at American University of Kuwait, whose professions require a mastery of the English language or who simply desire to improve their English language skills. The program includes instruction in grammar, speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Students will be assigned morning classes (8:00 am to 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm Sunday through Thursday), afternoon classes (12:00 pm to 4:00 Sunday through Thursday) or evening classes (4:00 pm to 9:00 Sunday through Thursday) based on the level they place into. Each hour contains 50 minutes of class and 10 minutes of break time. Classes are held on the campus of the American University of Kuwait, allowing students the opportunity to learn their way around campus and mix with students at the university. The Intensive English Program is supported by a wide range of resources, beginning with our staff. Our instructors are trained to teach speaking, listening, reading and writing at the college level. Other resources available to Intensive English students are individual and workshops offered through the Writing Center. Finally, as the Director of the course, I am available to help you if you still feel stuck after trying the resources above. Program Components One week of registration, orientation, testing and placement, 13 or 14 weeks of instruction, and one week of student activities, final testing and evaluation are part of each 15 or 16-week semester. Placement tests will be administered to determine where, among three levels of instruction ranging from intermediate (level 1) through advanced (level 3), you should study. Small classes, averaging 18 students per class, are taught by instructors with Master and Doctoral degrees and professional experience in teaching English as a second language. A computer assisted language learning laboratory is designed to provide students with additional practice in reading, vocabulary, writing, listening, pronunciation and grammar. Mission Statement The mission of the American University of Kuwait Intensive English Program is to prepare students seeking admission to enter the academic degree programs of AUK, by enabling them to gain sufficient mastery of the English Language and successfully apply the critical thinking skills they need to excel as students both during and after their formal studies. IEP will achieve its mission by training non-native English speakers in specific uses of English for academic purposes, by providing quality English language instruction to all who have chosen English as their medium of communication for academic pursuits and by promoting international, intercultural and self-understanding. Program Outcomes The Intensive English Program is designed to support students who need to improve their English language skills to the level required to study in University. Students are introduced to activities requiring students to obtain a working ability to: read university-level materials; write, edit and revise academic papers according to standard American English; communicate ideas in a clear and logical manner in oral presentation; and demonstrate academic skills in listening and note taking. Course Description Reading and Vocabulary Expand comprehension skills, increase vocabulary, practice making inferences. Develop analytical and discussion skills, focusing on such areas as education, politics, and the environment using both fiction and non-fiction selections. Recognize rhetorical strategies writers use to mount effective argument. Expository Writing and Conventions of Written English Develop clarity, correctness and variety of style in written English. Gain familiarity with styles, structures and conventions of academic prose. Focus on revision strategies and on group review of writing-in-progress. Read and respond critically to other writers, both professional and student writers. Speaking and Listening Skills Develop discussion and presentation skills; learn to express ideas more effectively in academic and professional contexts. Use various rhetorical patterns, learning to adjust vocabulary and level of formality audience and purpose. Strengthen comprehension and speaking skills through interaction audio and video materials, and taped oral journals. These classes are taught by teachers with at least a Masters degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or a related field. Level Progression At the end of each term, students are tested to determine to which level they should be promoted. This final test battery consists of the following: Classroom final examinations. Portfolio Presentations Another version of Accuplacer ESL Placement Test, an objective, multiple-choice examination that tests grammar, reading and listening comprehension, and sentence building. A writing sample based on another assigned topic. These factors, plus others (e.g., class participation/attendance, lab, reading groups, course work during the semester, and a grade of ‘C’ or above in the course), go into the final promotion decisions. Weekly Schedule The Intensive English Program provides 20 hours per week of instruction (each hour equals 50 minutes). Students will be assigned to oral communication and reading/writing classes which meet either from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m., 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., or from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily (Sunday through Thursday). The CALL lab hours are conveniently scheduled outside the 4 hour Structured Speaking/ Conversation/Reading/ Writing block. The CALL lab consists of 30 minutes of interactive English and 30 minutes of Reading Circles. IEP Accreditation - Self Study Commission The Intensive English Program at the American University of Kuwait has been engaged in a programmatic self-study in preparation for an accreditation site visit. The policies, practices, and processes of the program were studied to determine if they ensure fulfillment of the mission and satisfaction of the accreditation criteria. A self-study report, produced from this process, has been written. Faculty, staff, students and administrators of American University of Kuwait are encouraged to read the self-study report to prepare for the on-site accreditation visit. The self-study report has been submitted to the Commission for Intensive English Program Accreditation (CEA). On February 22, 23, and 24 2009, Consultant/Evaluators from the CEA will visit campus to assess the Intensive English Program for initial program accreditation. The CEA is recognized by the United States Secretary of Education as a reliable authority on the quality of instruction and services provided by accredited English language programs and institutions. The programmatic self-study provided the opportunity to understand more fully and to improve our Intensive English Program. For more than two years, groups chosen from IEP and various units have studied the program and assessed in what ways the program satisfies the CEA accreditation criteria. The sub-standards’ responses were produced from the resulting conversations and data that were considered.
