Summer University block 1: June 12th - July 6th, 2017 Course price: 1.850 Euros 18 hours of class sessions per week, 5 ECTS credit points Topic Water pollution, eutrophication, water purification, biotransformation, aquatic macrophytes, risk assessment. Target group The course is for all students interested in ecotoxicology and environmental engineering, with a focus on the topics of water and water purification, using eco-friendly methods. Learning Goal/Output Having taken this course, students will have: Developed fundamental knowledge on water pollution, contaminants and chemical analysis Developed ideas for suitable eco-friendly systems to combat these water pollutants Gained hands-on experience on building a Green Liver System Enhanced their creative thinking and learning in a group Course Components The course will include the following components: Classroom-based lectures Group work sub-projects Excursion to the Piano Lake Practical workshop Short Description The students will gain insight into the most important environmental contaminants, including micro-pollutants and natural toxins. They will learn how to use ecosystem services provided by aquatic macrophytes to clean up polluted water for different purposes (drinking water, spray irrigation water etc.) Analytical methods such as LC-MSMS (mass-spectrometry) will be shown and used as well. The students will have a hands-on experience building a model Green Liver System and will perform some basic experiments on water purification with this self-made model. The excursion to Piano lake will show the students a urban water body and a small Green Liver-like system installed in this lake. Commercial ideas will be developed and presented on how to use Green Liver Systems for water purification in future (e.g. Green Liver goes to Space, Green Liver on Wheels). Prerequisites The general prerequisites of the TU Berlin Summer University are: at least one year of university experience + English level B2 or equivalent.
