German as a foreign language has been a fixed component of Friedensau Adventist University since 1993. Course participants with basic knowledge (at least GER A1 level) can prepare linguistically for their studies in two semesters. For prospective students without previous knowledge of the language we offer a beginners’ course. The aim of both courses is the TestDaF (test in German as a foreign language, entitles the holder to study at German universities). For the students in the advanced course it is possible to reach the level for this test after one year. Experience suggests that beginners need 1.5 to two years. Since 2003, Friedensau has also been part of the ACA (Adventist Colleges Abroad) programme. This programme enables students from the USA to spend a year in Germany and study German as their major or minor. Course content German course at level A1 to B2/C1 (20 units of teaching per week) Phonetics Multimedia language laboratory Geography / history Literature Conversation Reading Excursions German in Germany Language and culture are inextricably linked. One important aspect of the language course is thus to bring students into contact with the culture and history of Germany and of Europe. Interesting excursions make this possible. A few examples from recent years: Hamburg: the lovely North German port Munich: the capital of Bavaria and close to the Alps Dresden: the fascinating Baroque city of Augustus the Strong Wittenberg: the town in which Luther lived, worked, and nailed the famous 95 theses to the door of the castle church Magdeburg: the nearby capital of Saxony-Anhalt, with its 800-year-old cathedral Campus life Friedensau is a university which attracts not only young people from all over the world, but also many Germans. So it is easy to get to know Germans and speak German with them. But you will not be the only one getting to know a new country and a new culture. As our university is small (around 200 students), you can easily make contacts here, and take part in activities such as sport, outings, spiritual and other events on campus. Examinations The intensive courses finish with the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or the TestDaF The certificate TestDaF qualifies foreign students to apply to a German university. The structured approach is given through lectures and case studies, which serve as a compass. Real-time experiment consists of individual and group work that makes you try all the new concepts and implement them to your business idea. Feedback comes from interaction with successful entrepreneurs and startup scene players. Those who develop a high quality business model may be put in contact with Berlin startup supporters. Intensive course - Berlin Not only is Berlin Germany’s largest city with over 3 million residents, it is also its liveliest. With its numerous universities, colleges, and research institutes, Berlin is the country’s most important economic, cultural, and educational center. Each year, key film festivals, concerts, and theater premiers are held in the city, which is also home to such world-famous landmarks as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and the illustrious shopping district along the Kurfuerstendamm. Berlin's restored splendor Since the reunification of Germany, the new and old capital of Germany has been restored to outshine even its former splendor - no small achievement considering that until the outbreak of World War II the city's splendor was world famous and unsurpassed in Europe. A perfect place to learn the German language Berlin is probably the most cosmopolitan and international of all German cities, and it is certainly a perfect place for our young course participants from all over the world to not only learn the language here, but also find out more about German history, politics and culture, while at the same time enjoying all the many great opportunities this amazing city has to offer: music events, movie theaters, museums, sightseeing, shopping, sports, bars, beer gardens and discos. Intensive course From 610.00 EUR / week Minimum age: 18 Students Max per class: 10 Number of lessons: 30 (45 min. each) per week School days : Monday to Friday Levels: A1 (elementary 1) to C2 (advanced 2) Start date(s): 2 Jun 2014, 9 Jun 2014, 16 Jun 2014, 23 Jun 2014, 30 Jun 2014 Boarding school with single and twin rooms The course participants are accommodated on campus in single and twin rooms, all with shower and WC. 3 main meals are provided and a fruit basket is available during the day. E Exciting Berlin Berlin is such an exciting city with such an amazing range of options on how to spend the free afternoons and evenings, that it is practically impossible to feel bored there. Historic sights in Berlin On the one hand, there are all the important sights that one should visit to get a glimpse of the important role that Berlin has always played in Germany's history: Brandenburg Gate, once the symbol of the separation, and now the symbol of reunification of the two Germanies; the Reichstag, the German Parliament with the new glass dome, a perfect blend of historical and modern architecture; the remnants of the Berlin Wall, the many memorials (like the new Holocaust Memorial), the various palaces, or the brand new government buildings like the “Kanzleramt”, to name a few. Museums and more On the other hand, there are world-renowned museums like the ones on the Museum Island, the Pergamon Museum, the Old Museum, the German Historical Museum, the Bauhaus, the Collection of Egyptian Art. Apart from the many concerts, theaters, cultural events, movie theaters, bars, beer gardens and discos, you can also play all types of sports, or stroll down the Kurfürstendamm, one of Berlin's busiest shopping streets, or take a boat trip on the river Spree and the Havel lakes or simply go on an outing to Wannsee and Grunewald, oases of tranquility ideal for those quiet afternoons in the sun. Leisure time activities Apart from offering an interesting leisure program to our course participants (which is included in the course fee, except for admission charges), we are also happy to help them organize their own activities. Full-day excursions Every Saturday, we offer our course participants full-day excursions to interesting cities or sights, which are included in the course fee, except for entrance fees. Possible destinations are: Dresden The famous capital of Saxonia in the East of Germany is famous for its world renowned “Zwinger Palace” and the city’s eclectic opera house “Semperoper”, as well as the recently restored “Frauenkirche”, which had been destroyed in World War II and had been kept in ruins as a war-memorial. Potsdam Another possible destination for our weekend excursions is Potsdam, called one of the most beautiful cities of Germany, and famous for Sanssouci Palace and Parks, the former summer residence of the Prussian King Frederick the Great, nowadays the greatest World Heritage Site of the country. Wannsee lakes
A favorite trip is the one to the linked pair of lakes called Wannsee: Both lakes are located on the river Havel and are separated only by the Wannsee bridge. They are the number-one bathing and recreation spot for Berlin, and the Strandbad Wannsee, an open-air lido features one of the longest inland beaches in Europe. Stralsund The former city of the Hanseatic League is situated at the southern coast of the Strelasund (a sound of the Baltic Sea separating the island of Rügen from the mainland). The Brick Gothic historic centre of this beautiful medieval city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. [-]
