The International Workshop is a 4 year multidisciplinary studio arts program for students from starter’s level to advanced art practice. Students can choose to take the entire training or embark on short term stays from one year down to 6-7 weeks. Students have their own studio-space in an old industrial warehouse. The course offers total immersion in art and culture in Barcelona though studio-visits and taking part in gallery exhibitions. Metàfora is housed in an old factory complex and attracts artists and art-students from all over the world. Classes in English with 25+ nationalities in each group. Short term stays Not everybody has the possibility ‘to tear out an entire year of the calendar and fly off to Spain’. We understand that. Therefore, we offer the possibility of shorter stays on the International Workshop. This option is a more affordable, yet intense and a concentrated way of savoring the course. Overseas students on short stays do not need to apply for a student visa, and can use a 3 month tourist visa instead. Students, who embark on a short term stay integrate entirely with the student-group on the International Workshop and can participate in all scheduled classes and activities. At the beginning of the short term stay the student will be assigned a personal tutor, who will monitor the work of the student once a week throughout the stay. Illustration is also a valuable means of artistic expression and a universal language in which to disseminate ideas with multiple applications and functions: from the adorning of opinion and information to the encouragement of reading. The professional area in which illustrators will develop their professional activity comprises different areas of communication: advertising, the Press, literature, design, application to products, new audiovisual formats. In this postgraduate degree the students will delve into the functions of illustration and its main fields and applications as well as into the figure of the illustrator and the value of the work of illustrators as providers of information, trend-setters, critics, historians or graphic witnesses who leave proof of something that took place at a particular moment. GENERAL OBJECTIVES The purpose of this postgraduate degree course is to analyse the different fields, uses and applications of illustration that the market needs, as well as to delve into technical and conceptual aspects to reach the student's own language. SYLLABUS This programme is made up of 8 modules that describe the different categories and functions of illustration, and concludes with a final project. In the modules the students will develop theoretical and practical contents with the creation of illustrations for the different areas of this profession. Creative people often feel somewhat guilty if asked about how they managed to come up with something because they simply “saw” it. It seemed obvious to them after a while. This is due to their ability to 1) associate prior experiences and 2) synthesize them, creating different ones. The reason they are able to do this is that they have had more experiences or have thought more about them than other people. Unfortunately, this is not common. Many people in our industries have not enjoyed diverse experiences which means they don't have enough “dots” to be able to connect them. They end up designing solutions that are too "linear", without a broad enough perspective with regards to the challenge before them. As Steve Jobs told Wired magazine in February of 1995: "The broader our understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have."... [-]
