Industrial Design

A course offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a discipline and receive certification toward careers in that area. Courses vary in length and requirements, depending on the field of study.

What is a course in industrial design? This path of study equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive as industrial designers. These skills include computer programming, graphic design and engineering. Some courses are designed for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree and are ready to specialize more closely in industrial design. These students often plan to start careers immediately upon finishing the course. As a result, these programs tend to involve more advanced coursework and have stricter enrollment requirements. However, there are also other programs that are designed with beginners in mind, and which therefore involve introductory courses in engineering, computer programming and math.

The most notable advantage to this path of study is the extent to which it allows students to combine creative thinking with technical know-how. Designing and engineering products is a task that is particularly rewarding because of the simultaneous intellectual challenges and artistic expression it makes possible.

Depending on a school's size and location, tuition and enrollment fees will vary. A program's admissions office is the best resource for more specific information about costs.

Having completed a course in industrial design, students can go on to pursue a number of different careers. The course certificate or diploma signifies to all potential employers that the student has gained an impressive skill set in the fields of engineering and design, which are both highly valuable areas of expertise in today's job market. Graduates go on to work for companies or government bodies as design consultants, product designers and transportation designers. Some students even start their own businesses and design their own products.
