Portuguese Semester at FAAP in São Paulo, Brazil

Bridge Education Group
Campus Full time 1 semester February 2017 Brazil São Paulo

This semester-long study abroad program utilizes full-immersion instruction to build Portuguese language skills by learning about Brazil’s history, culture, politics, and literature. [+]

Portuguese Semester at FAAP in São Paulo, Brazil Portuguese Semester at a glance City: São Paulo Host Institution: FAAP Duration: Semester Course Hours & Credits: 260 hours (12-17 credits) Language of Instruction: Portuguese Minimum Portuguese Proficiency: Beginner Minimum GPA: 2.5/4.0 Portuguese Semester at FAAP Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) in São Paulo is not only one of Brazil’s most respected higher education institutions, it is also one of the most renowned centers for supporting arts and culture in the state of São Paulo. This combination makes it the perfect place to deepen your language skills and cultural immersion by participating in BridgeAbroad’s Portuguese Semester at FAAP. This semester-long study abroad program utilizes full-immersion instruction to build Portuguese language skills by learning about Brazil’s history, culture, politics, and literature. São Paulo is a perfect setting for a study abroad program that values learning through cultural experiences, and frequent lectures and excursions that will help to bring the city’s vast resources to life. What makes São Paulo unique? As anyone who reads the Business section of the newspaper knows, Brazil is surging. And nowhere is the country’s dazzling rise more evident than in its capital of commerce, São Paulo. An Alpha Global City, São Paulo’s currently the tenth richest metropolitan center on Earth, and it’s projected to beat out Paris and rise to number six by 2025. This extravagant growth doesn’t just make for an amazing business case study; it’s also flooded the city with the sorts of ultra-high-end boutique hotels, luxury goods retailers, and top-notch restaurants more often associated with Beverly Hills than Brazil. But as any visitor to glamour-drenched Rua Oscar Freire knows, this outdated way of thinking is so twentieth-century. So step aside, Champs-Élysées—it’s São Paulo’s time to shine! Academics Course Load: Extensive Portuguese I, II or III Credit Load: 12-17 credits (260 hours) Language of Instruction: Portuguese Minimum Portuguese Proficiency Required: Beginner. Students will complete a language placement test and personal interview upon arrival in order to determine appropriate language level. Minimum GPA: 2.5/4.0 Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of Portuguese is required. Transcript: Issued by FAAP. BridgeVirtual: All BridgeAbroad programs include access to three BridgeVirtual language sessions prior to departure. Each session lasts 2 hours and includes online private face-to-face language instruction with a certified native speaking teacher, as well as pre- and post-class online activities. Students are welcome to continue with more lessons at an additional cost. Courses: Full-Immersion Learning: Specially designed for students with beginning-level or no knowledge of Portuguese, your Portuguese courses will take a full-immersion approach—in other words, you and your teachers will be communicating just in Portuguese. BridgeAbroad believes strongly in the value of full-immersion learning; research has shown that avoiding English helps foreign-language students to advance more rapidly by avoiding the pitfalls of unnecessary translation. By linking Portuguese words directly to concepts, actions, and objects rather than English words, you’ll avoid the stilted speech that so often plagues international students and master Portuguese as it’s actually spoken in Brazil. Language Through Culture: Learning a language is about much more than memorization! Rather than focusing on dry grammar and vocabulary exercises, students will learn the language through a study of Brazil’s economy, culture, history, and literature. Excursions to São Paulo’s cultural and historical hotspots will help to carry your learning beyond the classroom and into the city. *PLEASE NOTE: Some host university programs may require a minimum number of students to enroll in order to run the program. In the event that a program may be cancelled, BridgeAbroad will keep all applicants informed of any updates from the host university as quickly as possible. Admission Requirements: Be enrolled as an undergraduate at a U.S. university or college Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher Keep in mind that ALL U.S. citizens are required to secure a visa to enter Brazil, regardless of the program or length of stay, so please contact your local embassy or consulate as soon as possible for further information. The Host Institution Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado Founded in 1947, Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) has distinguished itself as one of Brazil’s most respected centers for the study of art and business. FAAP has a rich history of supporting the arts; today, its art museum, theater, and artistic residence programs continue to lend the campus a unique cultural vibrancy. Its facilities are state-of-the-art, with wireless internet access throughout and high-tech hardware and software integrated directly into the classroom experience. With partner institutions in nearly 40 countries across the globe, FAAP is thoroughly international in its outlook, and social responsibility remains a pillar of its educational philosophy. FAAP is located in São Paulo, Brazil’s largest city and one of the most vibrant in South America. São Paulo might be better known for commercial strength than for its tourist attractions, but as residents of this diverse metropolis know, its internationally renowned dining and nightlife scene and unmatched cultural offerings make São Paulo the sort of place that’s hard to leave—and impossible to find boring. At FAAP, São Paulo will be your classroom, and the opportunities to learn will be as vast as the city itself. Accommodations & Meals Host Family Many students prefer living with a local host family because of the opportunity to immerse themselves in the daily rhythms of Brazilian life that it affords. You’ll have your own room and key, enabling you to come and go as you please. But you’ll also have a family of native Portuguese speakers to build your language skills and teach you about their country over meals (breakfast and dinner daily) and informal conversations. Student Apartments Students looking for a higher degree of independence may prefer to share a student apartment. Meals are not included, but you’ll have access to a shared kitchen. Cultural Activities & Excursions Studying at FAAP isn’t just about classes. A dynamic center of learning, FAAP’s campus overflows with extracurricular activities, including events at its theater and art museum and seminars by visiting leaders from the realms of cultural and politics. In addition, the school will organize an orientation day shortly after your arrival to help you feel comfortable in your new home and get your fellow exchange students. Some possible excursions include: Historic Downtown One of Latin America’s largest financial districts, downtown São Paulo isn’t just home to massive skyscrapers with commanding views—though of course it’s got plenty of those. As you’ll discover on your visit, the grand buildings that line its pedestrianized streets, including lustrous Luz Station and the baroque Municipal Theater, represent the city’s most beautiful history lesson. Municipal Market Popularly known as the “Mercadão” (“really big market”), São Paulo’s Mercado Municipal is just that: an imposing building with 55 stained glass windows, perfect 1920s detailing, and—oh yeah—every sort of edible you can imagine. Eat your way through creamy cheeses, fragrant fruits, sizzling spices, and a whole ocean’s worth of bacalhau (cod) on your trip to this epicurean Eden. São Paulo Museum of Art A glass cube suspended over buzzing Paulista Avenue on four giant red legs, São Paulo’s Museum of Art (MASP) is almost as cool on the outside as it is from within. You’ll work your way from Pre-Columbian Brazil to Andy Warhol, gliding past Rembrants and Riveras as we soak up Latin America’s most renowned collection of Western art. **We also partner with STA Travel to offer our students affordable and exciting adventures while abroad– check out our Travel Resources page for more details!
