This program has been specifically designed to enable students to develop their language skills for university study, and also their critical and independent learning abilities. In terms of language skills, the core texts have an academic skills focus, and these are supplemented by a number of additional activities focused on particular skills. For example, in all levels students must carry out presentations on a regular basis, ending up with an independent academic presentation on Level 3. The students’ ability to learn independently is developed over the English language program, with students being asked to complete larger pieces of coursework as they move through the program. On Level 3 the students spend ten weeks working on a 1,500 word academic essay, receiving support through individual tutorials. Critical thinking is also encouraged, with students being required to form opinions on a range of subjects and express these arguments in both written and spoken form. For those students who wish to develop their English proficiency further, Level 4 of the ELPP is a good option. This level is designed to enable students to develop their advanced communication skills up to an equivalent of IELTS 6.5. In class, students will engage with real world topics of importance to the globalised world, attending lectures, reading and carrying out tasks in relation to these topics. Students who successfully complete all their Level 4 assignments, will also be able to apply for 3 credits exemption from their tertiary course. English Preparatory Programmes (Full-Time) The English Preparatory Programme is an intensive English language programme aimed at students who already possess a basic level of English Language but who need to develop their English language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) quickly and comprehensively. It is designed to take students from an elementary grasp of English up to a proficient level of fluency. It follows a communicative approach to learning English which develops confidence and understanding while at the same time is fun and rewarding. The syllabus contains many ‘real world' situations and examples that are relevant to students in the modern world. At the same time there is still emphasis on the importance of accuracy in English use. Programme Objective Having successfully completed the English Preparatory Programme, students will be able to: Further their knowledge of English Grammar and become more familiar and confident with Grammar and sentence structures. Gain the required vocabulary for everyday life and further courses. Write reports, make presentations, take notes well, produce formal and informal letters and make balanced arguments. Examinations & Assessment All students are required to sit for a written examination for all modules at the end of each term. Students must fulfil the attendance requirement of at least 90% for each module before they are considered eligible to take the examinations. The candidate will be allowed to sit for a supplementary examination(s) for the module(s) that they have failed in the main examination. However, a supplementary examination fee of S$100.00 (subject to prevailing GST rate) per module is applicable. To repeat a failed level, a student must attend classes and pay a re-module course fee before he/she is considered eligible to take the examinations. All examination questions and the marking of scripts will be moderated and/or examined by the Marketing Institute of Singapore Training Centre Examination Board before they are released to students. The decision of the Board is final and no correspondence will be entertained. Award of Certificate Students who have completed all necessary course works, successfully passed all assessments and met all financial obligations to the Institute shall be awarded the Certificate of Completion. PE101 Preparatory English - Elementary (Level 1) During the Elementary level students will gain an understanding of the basic building blocks of English language. Highlights of the course include: basic English tenses, question forms, functional English, social situations, agreeing and disagreeing, informal letter writing skills and filling in forms. PE201 Preparatory English - Pre-intermediate (Level 2) The Pre-Intermediate level continues from where the Elementary level left off. It will build upon the foundations that were laid before. PE401 Preparatory English - Upper Intermediate (Level 4) During the Upper-Intermediate level, students will have greater independence in their learning of the English language. Group work and problem solving skills are improved through the completion of various tasks therefore ensuring students' readiness to go onto further study.
