Certificate III in Bricklaying / Blocklaying

This course will develop the skills and knowledge you need to have a successful career in the building and construction bricklaying trade. Learn how to lay and bond bricks and similar building blocks and how to construct ornamental panels, feature walls, arches and columns. You will also learn how to lay bricks for domestic, commercial and public buildings and how to prepare and maintain brickwork. Students who are currently enrolled or commencing in 2015 S2 at PWA - Thornlie campus will complete their studies at this campus.
Please note that from Semester 1, 2016 this course will be moving to PWA - Balga campus.

To successfully complete this course, students may be required to undertake work placement in the industry they have chosen. More information, advice and industry contacts will be provided at orientation and during their course.

Students must complete a total number of 27 units which comprise of 21 core units plus 6 elective units. Electives are determined by the Institute you are enrolled at. Core units are :

  • Carry out setting out
  • Work effectively and sustainably in the construction industry
  • Plan and organise work
  • Conduct workplace communication
  • Carry out measurements and calculations
  • Read and interpret plans and specifications
  • Apply basic levelling procedures
  • Erect and dismantle restricted height scaffolding
  • Carry out basic demolition
  • Apply OHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry
  • Handle and prepare bricklaying and blocklaying materials
  • Use bricklaying and blocklaying tools and equipment
  • Carry out masonry veneer construction
  • Carry out cavity brick construction
  • Construct masonry steps and stairs
  • Lay masonry walls and corners
  • Lay multi-thickness walls and piers
  • Install flashings and damp proof course
  • Construct masonry arches
  • Construct curved walls
  • Install fire-rated masonry construction
