Associate of Science Programs in Elementary Education

An Associate of Arts degree can be useful for many life situations, but they all have one thing in common: in-depth education in a subject area with a smaller time commitment than a bachelor’s degree. This education may be applied to a bachelor’s degree later if a student chooses.

What is an Associate of Science in Elementary Education? Children are the future, and with students’ help, they can be skilled, refined, and full of passion. Elementary education generally covers ages five to 11, and the requirements for success are much different than older students. Courses may cover early childhood literacy, curriculum development, guidance and discipline, and creative expression and play. Many programs require in-class internships, standardized testing, and appropriate licensure upon completion.

Graduates of an elementary education program bolster their communication skills as they execute lesson plans, present reports, and hold conferences with parents. To better educate with play, graduates may also learn hand-eye coordination skills. Programs also provide students with leadership skills necessary to keep a classroom under control.

This course of study may take anywhere from one year to three, depending on how quickly students choose to complete it. Course requirements and tuition rates will differ between schools.

This type of study usually can allow graduates to work in a variety of educational settings such as a school or daycare, or in administrative roles within a school district. Common job titles include childcare director, child and family social worker, elementary teacher, preschool teacher, guidance counselor, and education administrator. Those who pursue higher education may become elementary education professors, passing on their experiences to others passionate about the field.
