Associate Degree in Interior Decoration and Design
This dynamic, practical, industry-relevant program qualifies you to plan, design and decorate a residential or commercial interiors focusing on the project's aesthetic, environmental, spatial, safety and business aspects.
Great interior decorators and designers understand what makes a space work for a particular purpose, whether it be a home, office, hotel or commercial environment.
This Associate Degree offers you a unique curriculum that facilitates the development of specialised applied knowledge, high level technical skills, and the use of relevant technology software to communicate a broad range of interior concepts, their documentation and embellishment.
The program is underpinned by the exploration of sustainable practices in the planning and specification of interior structures with a strong focus on the application of materials and surface treatments, furnishings, and colour and lighting solutions to create aesthetic and functional spaces in both residential and commercial environments.
You will study residential briefs to develop your understanding of:
- architectural views
- space planning
- decorative arts and contemporary interior style.
Visual technology and communication skills underpin the presentation aspects of working as a designer/decorator. You will work with computer-aided design (CAD), Photoshop and other industry-standard software.
You will deepen your knowledge of residential and commercial briefs. Sustainability underpins the approach to all projects including lighting, soft furnishings, colour, interior building materials and techniques.
You'll develop your 3D visualisation and modelling skills to produce detailed and accurate spatial documentation.
You'll also hone your presentation skills in design practice studios for both concept and finished presentations and engage with experienced professionals through an industry-mentoring program.
Professional recognition and accreditation
Current students can join the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) as student members. Graduates can apply for associate membership and full membership once they have gained professional experience.
Program entry requirements
You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 50%.
Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.

English language requirements
To study this program you will need to complete 1 of the following English proficiency tests:
- Academic IELTS overall band of 6.0 with no individual band below 5.5
- TOEFL (Paper-based): minimum score of 550 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.0)
- TOEFL (Internet-based): minimum score of 79 with a minimum of 19 in each section
- Cambridge English (Advanced CAE): CAE Grade C
- Pearson: Minimum score of 50 (no band less than 42).
