Aboriginal Addictions Services Counselling Certificate

You will be a powerful influence in making a real difference in people’s lives. You will learn to support individuals, families and communities in identifying and managing addictions through prevention and treatment programs.

This 8-month (2 semester) program will teach you the multilevel intervention skills necessary to help individuals, families, and communities in identifying and managing addictions. You will learn how to support dysfunctional behaviours throughout a range of addictions. Program content emphasizes Aboriginal history and culture, and focuses on the needs of Aboriginal communities.

EMPLOYMENT

Addictions Counsellors often work as a valuable member of the team in community social services, children and youth services, justice system institutions, community Aboriginal services, and emergency shelters. Your role includes prevention, promoting healthy lifestyles, and acting as an advocate.

PROGRAM LENGTH

8-months (2 semesters)

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Credit in English 30-1 or 65% in English 30-2 or equivalent

OR:

  • Successful completion of the General Equivalency Development test with a standard score of 520 in Language Arts: Reading and Writing

OR:

  • Satisfactory results on the BVC Admissions Test.

Certified by the First Nations Wellness Addictions Counsellor Board (FNWACB).

WORK EXPERIENCE

Students will be required to travel to various locations in order to complete their practicum placements. Every effort is made to accommodate students in placements within the time frame of the program, however in rare instances there may be a delay in program completion until a placement can be arranged. A current Police Information Check (PIC) with Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) must be submitted prior to practicum placements.
